Montana State Notes

The Yale Bulldogs fell to the Montana State Bobcats in the second round of the FCS Playoffs in a 13-21 slugfest in Bozeman. Despite the loss, it was a season to remember with 7 straight victories to secure a share of the Ivy League Championship, the Ivy’s first ever playoff victory, and a thrilling ending at Montana State against the FCS’ second ranked squad. Congratulations to all of the players and coaches for their talent, hard work and dedication to the program’s success.

Yale quickly answered concerns of whether the Bulldogs would be able to move the ball on the Bobcats’ stiff defense with Reno connecting with Brown on two fantastic plays in the opening drive. The drive would die after a Lewis false start and two blown-up plays, but did seem to provide a spark of confidence along the sidelines. Reno showed true toughness as he returned to play after two blows to the head sidelined him. In the passing game, Reno finished 20 of 35 for 198 yards, 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions. One interception essentially functioned as a punt on an improbable 4th and long, while the other interception was a backbreaker inside the redzone when the Bulldogs were desperate for points. Howe’s brief appearance in relief proved to be disastrous after a deep pass over the middle was picked off by the Bobcats’ star safety. If a deep middle shot on the Big Sky’s Defensive Player of the Year was truly necessary with Reno out, it’s simply inexcusable for the coaching staff not to have McCaughey in position to attempt that. The Howe interception, Reno’s interception off a deflection in the redzone, and Reno’s miss to a wide-open Brown were three crushing blows to the offense on Saturday. Two of those errors could have potentially been mitigated with perfect coaching if McCaughey had stepped in as the backup or if the offense had simply run Pitsenberger in the wildcat formation for four straight plays when the Elis had first and goal. The offensive line struggled early on against MSU’s physical front but was able to generate rushing lanes as the game progressed. Pitsenberger rushed for 124 yards (4.8 yards per carry) and a touchdown in a phenomenal cap to his Yale career, while Daal also found success with 5.4 yards per carry on 8 attempts. With Santiago sidelined with an injury, Brown’s return to the passing game was critical and he torched the Bobcats for 107 receiving yards and a touchdown. Smith, Wagner, Anderson and Stevens all made key catches on the best secondary they had faced this season. Unfortunately, the offense needed to play nearly mistake free to win this contest and MSU prevailed in the key plays to define the outcome.

The Bulldogs’ defense has been a very underrated unit across the FCS and kept Yale’s chances alive with excellent play. The Bobcats were held to just 7 points in the first half and only 14 points in the second half. 14 of MSU’s points came off Yale’s interceptions as the mistakes from the Elis shifted momentum to the home squad. Larry led Yale in tackles with 7 and also had a fumble recovery and a batted down pass. Kamara displayed his immense talents causing two fumbles, one of which the Bobcats were very fortunate to recover in the endzone for a touchdown. Grant and Ayo-Durojaiye combined for 11 tackles, while Schmidt consistently delivered hard hits on game-saving tackles. The secondary kept the Bobcats’ passing game in check with just 92 passing yards on 10 receptions. Webster, Gonzales, Tarver, Kamara, Eastep and Schmidt battled throughout the game against a very quick receiving corps. Shaber and Yang were impressive along the defensive front with clutch stops to derail drives. Montana State was able to effectively run the ball with 249 rushing yards on the afternoon for 5.9 yards per attempt, yet allowing only 21 points against a juggernaut is simply remarkable.

Piper did not attempt a field goal but was perfect on his lone PAT. Keeney averaged 42.8 yards per punt on a day filled with strong wind gusts. Tarver had a beautiful 34-yard kickoff return, while Anderson was able to secure a punt despite a vicious hit. The failed two point conversion attempt was nothing short of a blunder with the opportunity to close the gap to 7 points.

The days of happily sailing off into the sunset following a season-ending Harvard win to secure the Ivy Championship are now over, but the silver lining in the loss is that Yale (or other top Ivy teams) can compete at the highest level for a national championship.

Go Bulldogs!

How about who is staying taking an extra year. What about the incoming 2026 commitments. .? Please keep the blog open , so we can share and communicate information. Thank you

Just wanted to shoutout Yale ’27 Tight End, Spencer Mermans, and ’26 Wide Receiver, Nico Brown, for being the highest rated players at their position in college football regardless of division on PFF.

We’re in a “quiet period” right now in ncaa recruiting preceding a “dead period” which begins 12/22. Things won’t open up again until that ends on January 5th.

Seems like it’s been a quiet period all along. I know there’s’ more. But Yale is holding those cards , close to their chest. Not looking to kick up a fuss.

Yes, Hale Rikkers, OL, is still committed per is X page. Here is the commits I have:

We did pretty good with Nolan Grooms and Grant Jordan the last three years and Dante won a title this year. No complaints.

Agreed! Yale has a winning percentage of .738 with three conference championships, a playoff win and three Bushnell Cup awards over these past four season. Hard to top that! Congratulations to Mendoza though on a remarkable college football career.

Garon Kemp was highly recruited coming out of high school. I was expecting to see more of him at Yale this year and next. I think he might have been injured this year. Sorry that we won’t get the chance to see him play next year at Yale. Best of luck to him.

As this is probably the best venue for a conversation for true Yale fans, this post is meant to alert you all to what may place Yale football on a very challenging path going forward. As previously discussed, Coach Reno is dealing with some serious health issues. Coach McGowan deserves a lot of credit for guiding Team 152 through a challenging year and would make a great replacement for Coach Reno. There are currently a number of assistant coaches looking to leave Yale. Making McGowan the “interim” coach will make it very difficult to attract good assistant coaches to replace those that coaches that do leave, and will prove a challenge with new recruits. Nobody wants to play or coach for an “interim” coach. There may be legal reasons preventing the AD from naming McGowan the HC, but the impact could present a difficult challenge for the program.

Tony Reno is the creator of this team , Yale had a great season to measure that success. But the last 5 games of the season was the bomb.!!
The Defensive Backs , The Linebackers and that stellar defensive line.!! Ruled.!!
Coach McGowan, was instrumental in getting that team with Coach Reno clicking for this historic season.
Chris Ostrovsky, and all the coaches worked each unit tremendously.. !! Each game there were strides of improvement. It was wonderful to witness it. The way the TE were implemented into the YSU game was like YAH.!! Everyone was getting into the game and kicking’ ass .!! I would have liked to have seen that against MSU.!! But Yale did compete, and a couple of plays here and there. Yale would have continued.
But my point Coach Sean McGowan , Yale Football is in great hands and brilliantly lead for next season. As Coach Reno, recovers and gets his health back in order.
One of the other posters stated he wished that Yale was still playing. Yah baby.!! I want more Yale football . I’d like to see Yale with some home games for these FCS playoffs.!! LET’S GO BULLDOGS.!!

Agree with a JH. I would add that Coach McGowan turned the defense around on a dime in 2016 in time to beat Harvard. He is also a strong recruiter who has gotten Yale many top recruits from the very strong WPIAL conference in western Pennsylvania. He is the perfect man for the job of interim head coach. Yale is in good hands.

Nice to see someone different. I assume Holy Cross is on the schedule, who is the third OOC opponent?

We can’t depend on Vickie, but someone should be trying to put pressure on the Presidents to start the season earlier. I don’t know why starting earlier isn’t being pushed by all the Ivy AD’s. It’s a no brainer along with an 11th game.

It will be interesting to see who the third OOC opponent will be. The CAA schedules look all set now. I’m hoping for another Patriot League opponent, preferably Richmond which still owes Yale a return game from the cancelled 2020 season. But I’m guessing it will be a NEC or Pioneer team or Merrimack.

Good securing URI, why not Big Sky, MVC, MAC, AAC, ACC, I mean , why not. Come on Vicky.!! You can do it. Let’s start getting things done for the future.!!

Sacramento St could be a long shot possibly as they are now FCS Independents and currently have 10/3 open on their schedule. I would like to see that game.

This all sounds great, revisit Mercer, Cal Poly as well.but try to secure a home and away commitment. These could also be recruiting opportunities too.
Go to different parts of this country, Yale is a brand that is recognized. People are curious about these Northeast Ivy Leaguers. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS.!!

Gentlemen; I for one will complement the analysis generated throughout the year. Our squad performed admirably throughout the playoffs, and of course, victory over the cantabs. However, looking forward, it would be nice to find out who will be returning next year and our incoming freshman class.

Nice catch B10jw , Dylan Liner 6’2 200 lbs. WR DB looks like he’s able to play either position deftly 4.4 40 extremely athletic soft hands Offers from Cornell ,South Dakota State. Take a look at his hudl page

I don’t know if there’s another FCS ranking that comes out. Yale played Montana State tougher than Montana and SFA. Nobody had an answer for Pitsenberger. Also Yale was better conditioned and more accustomed to playing full games – the parity in the Ivies demands it. Wonder if there’s any chatter on the national boards. Yale has a clear case to be top 5.

Unfortunately The Ivies have that lingering stigma. That is being , being the Ivy League. Even when Yale played MSU well . People not all , but a lot crediting MSU overlooking Yale.
I still think if Yale made a couple of more plays, and those 2 turnovers. Which MSU capitalized into touchdowns. Yale could in fact be going to Nashville after the holiday.
I hope that the Ivy League gets their priorities straight and start to do the things , that will help Football be successful. Instead of how they usually do. Drag the feet , and chew cud.

I was able to watch The Bills game yesterday. Jackson Hawes had 2 catches 1 to keep a drive going .
Caught Mason Tipton with the Saints he caught 4 passes 1 for a 1st down.
Always enjoy watching the guys do well.!!

I don’t wanna see Harvard anything. But I would appreciate some of our own Yale Football commits. I look a couple of times a day.nothing at all . I know there has to be more than 9 to11 that have been mentioned.?

#6 – Hugo Djeumeni will be a sophomore, reportedly had an offer from Boston College. I assume he may be the starting RB next year.
Others on the roster (as of this past season) –
#5 Cuttler Adams, will be a junior, as will #31 Adam Pandolfi from North Haven, CT.

Cuttler Adams is the TRUTH. Unfortunately got injured this spring but he’ll likely take the lead for the RB room moving forward.

I’d think that with Dante Reno, talented young WR’s, and Abu Kamara coming back — plus incoming freshmen and transfers — the Elis won’t be looking at 2026 as a rebuilding year.
With Noah Piper just a sophomore, we could always win games 18 to 17…….

And with that Merry Christmas Eve to all on this board. May your Holiday be filled with happiness and You’re New Year stress free.!

Yale was rusty after a 19 day lay off and got off to a slow start. The tied them in the 2nd half 47-47 once they shook off the rust.

Kudos to Coach Janecek for finding an overlooked gem. I think Dew will be made a DE. Ezekiel Larry is tough to replace, but Dew looks like he’s got what it takes. Maybe not quite as much speed, but lots of power and agility.

Looking at the Hudl tapes on these young men. Jamel Dew. Coming in for the offense, on goal line situations. He runs like a fullback. Knees high straight as an arrow.!!

Spenser, good luck hope you do well. You were underutilized. Yale needs to integrate they are tight ends better.. like they did against Youngstown State game. YALE has a plethora of talent that is not used and it’s a shame.

Looking forward too seeing the FCS Championship Game tonight. I would like to see MSU win. So far Yale was the only team to stay close to the Bobcats.
Yale men’s basketball plays Brown in Providence at 7:00pm Tip Off. Go Bulldogs

To the moderator: How about opening a new thread called Winter Updates so we can continue sharing news about recruiting, the transfer portal, and any other Yale football news over the next couple of months.

My guess is it will be CCSU at Yale on 10/3. Hope I’m right. That would make two of Yale’s three OCC opponents as 2025 Lambert Cup top 10 and FCS playoff teams.

New Yale commit:

Callum Schweitzer, QB, 6’2”, 200 lbs. 3 star. 4.75 40 yard dash. Los Gatos, CA. Received co-offensive player of the year award. 3 Star. Offer from San Jose St.

Senior Stats

2,452 passing yards
130 QBR (67%)
25 passing TDs
440 rushing yards
8 rushing TDs

Thanks a lot SOE. I was wondering where they’d land. I still think they should’ve been top ten the way they played Montana state on the road. Great four-quarter team. Great defensive speed. Maybe the best tailback in FCS.
