Summer Updates

Similar to last season, for fans thinking the quarterback competition would come down to McCaughey and Howe duking it out for the top spot, Coach Reno pulled a cat out of the bag to change course. Tony’s son, Dante Reno, a former 3-star recruit and backup quarterback for South Carolina, has transferred to Yale to play for his father. Behind one of the SEC’s top returning quarterbacks on the depth chart, it was clear that Dante would not see significant playing time barring injuries at South Carolina, so it was a smart move for him to upgrade his educational opportunities and boost his playing time at Yale. The unfortunate casualty in this process was the talented dual-threat quarterback, Bradyn Fleharty, who transferred to Ball State. Coach Reno now has the difficult task of trying to separate his coaching life from his family life as this blurred line could be detrimental to locker room morale if not managed properly.

Cornerback Breylan Thompson, who could have been a cornerstone of the defense for the next three seasons, has transferred to Stanford. While Stanford clearly respects the talents of Ivy League athletes, the coaching staff has not shown the willingness to give Ivy transfers significant playing time. Former Yale defender, Clay Patterson, had just two tackles last season for the Cardinal, while former Princeton running back, Ryan Butler, saw just seven carries in 2024 before entering the transfer portal. If Thompson is unable to crack the starting lineup this season, it will be a huge blow to his development and possible journey to the NFL.

On the other end of the spectrum is Ezekiel Larry. Larry sought NIL money and greener pastures last year at San Diego State but has returned to Yale in a huge win for the defense. Larry’s ability to fly past opposing offensive tackles with his quickness off the line was sorely missed last season. A potential lineup of Larry, Egodogbare, Yang, and Jackson-Bass could be a nightmare for opponents in 2025.

It sounds as though Mason Shipp will be returning for a 5th year to bolster what appeared to be a nearly depleted wide receiver unit. Clayton Sobecki, a 6’1”, 170 lb. athlete, has transferred to Yale after a season at the Air Force Academy. Sobecki received offers from Army, Navy and Air Force as a high school recruit and adds much needed speed to Yale as a 10.5 second 100-meter runner. Expectations are very high for Jaxton Santiago after a breakout freshman campaign in 2024.

Breylan Thompson did a great job last year and I wish him well at Stanford; but if it was a trade of Breylan Thompson for Ezekiel Larry I’d make that trade in a heartbeat. Net upgrade for Yale.

Agree about Larry being a net upgrade, but if Thompson happens to find that the grass is not greener, the Larry example is that you can come home again.

Gentlemen; in my mind’s eye, the linebacker position is the major concern. Although historically there have been many linebackers who have stepped up and played exceedingly well after sitting on the bench for two or three years.

I really want to see Yale schedule the new members of the Patriot League (Richmond, William & Mary and Villanova). The challenge will be the Ivy League’s late start to the season.

Even with the recent expansion to a 12 games season for the FCS it only leaves three open weekends for Patriot League teams to schedule OOC opponents . One week typically goes to a FBS school, which leaves only two. At least one of those will be played before the Ivy League currently even starts its season. That leaves maybe one week at most for a Patriot League team to schedule an Ivy opponent.

If the Ivy League goes to an 11 game schedule with a BYE they could start the season two weeks earlier, allowing for more match-ups against the Patriot League and any other conferences it desires. Otherwise, scheduling will become increasingly difficult. The Ivy League and it’s fans will have to take whatever they get.

It will be a shame to lose the ability to schedule opponents of like-minded academic focused universities like the Patriot League, who the Ivy League has such long histories of playing.

Gentlemen; linebacker position is still in my mind side, the biggest concern. Although historically, many quality linebackers have stepped up and played exceedingly well after sitting on the bench for two or three years.

Inumidun Ayo Durojaiye is returning to the LB room for a 5th year to add some needed experience to the room

The secondary and the d-line look good! Old Blue is right about linebacker, a position that cost us last year. O-line and running back are strong. Big upgrade with Reno at QB. I’m glad Shipp is back, but we have holes to fill at receiver. Still, I’m optimistic!

Mr.Moderator, do you have anything else, that you could share with the Yale Football Fans.? Recruiting , for next year anything to engage the people who look for anything news worthy. Thank you

Now that University of New Haven a IAA football program from the NEC, is there a realistic possibility that they could be coming to the Bowl for a yearly game?!!? This is a game that I would love to see and makes a lot of sense for the out of conference schedule. The New Haven AD said that they have scheduled an Ivy team for the 2026 schedule, could it be the Bulldogs? Plus, the Chargers are led by Carm Cozza’s grandson! A game between these two schools makes a lot of sense…

Da, comrade. 😉

It will be twenty years before we see an 11th game based on the the glacial pace at which change comes to Ivy Sports. Playoffs and an 11th game should have been implemented together. The correct and logical thing to do is never the concern of the Ivy Presidents.

I understand your point, but we will also be less beat up than they are when the two schools meet.

I’d like to see the 10-game season continue, only because 10-0 is easier than 11-0. I’ve been a fan since ’66 and want to see the first perfect season since 1960 while I’m still around.

If Yale went 10-0, they would make the playoffs and unless they won a national championship they still wouldn’t go undefeated. I would much rather have that 11th game and not sit around twiddling my thumbs for three weeks in September.

Yale and The Ivy League, can change that scenario. Take the proverbial head out of the sand. Do what is needed to support the program. Instead of whining about it. I am so tired of this mind set .!!
Start the season sooner, schedule 2 more games for the season. Be more progressive with a monetary package for your players..!! Lose the Ivy League syndrome.!! Everyone else has this and is doing that.!! Yale better get on the Ball and start making the path , so others can follow or be left behind in the wake of progress .!!

HOW ABOUT THE YALE AD TAKE THE INITIATIVE AND SCHEDULE AN 11TH GAME. I AM SURE SHE WILL BE TO DO IT. HAVE SOME BRAVADO!

Yale will have only two listed QB’s from this roster after Howe and McCoughey graduate after this season. They need to add at least two QB’s to the ‘26 Recruiting class. Sobecki and Tatersall could play QB in an emergency but it’s best to avoid one.

I’m sure Yale, and the other schools do as well. But Dartmouth has the intestinal fortitude to lead the way. Very disappointed in Yales ineptitude. From The Leaderless head from Colgate . If Tom Beckett was in charge. Things would have been in hand and on the way. (TRUTH).!!

Gentlemen; I concur with the current ineptitude of our athletic Director to schedule an 11th game or get some type of momentum toward 11th game. Maybe Mr. ship can again gather players to petition the president to get an 11th game. It seems to be the only way.

Liam Marley, 6’4”, 245lbs, DT/DE, Calvary Christian Academy, Ft Lauderdale, FL. Offers from Navy, Wofford and Penn

I have a problem, I look forward to seeing certain people.with the upcoming season. I just found out that Bob Blanchard passed away last February.
No mention of this Gentleman, NOTHING.!! This Blog doesn’t realize the importance that it holds to the small fan base, to the community. You better take your elitist attitude a bit of an adjustment. STOP , SHUTTING THIS BOARD. !! KEEP THE LINE OF COMMUNICATION OPEN.!!
GET SOMEONE WHO GIVES A DAMN. TO DO THIS GOD FORSAKEN BOARD.!!

I have to apologize, Bob Blanchard is alive. I get heated in cases , where I care about things that matter to me. Obviously Mr. Blanchard and Yale Football , matters to me.
I guess for the past 64 years , it was ingrained into my soul. I wish that this League, University and Blog would be impassioned as me and some of the Fans.
I was relieved when my daughter, confirmed my error.

Why is Ezekiel Larry NOT listed on the newly-posted roster? Please tell me it was a mistake and his name will appear today.

Could Yale leave the Ivy League and start paying players like everyone else? Play a 12 game schedule? Form an eastern league with Syracuse, BC, etc.?
They could but they won’t. Football is just not that important to Yale. It is to those of us on this blog but not to the University. Just cast your eyes over to the nearly empty student section at every game except Harvard. Other Ivy schools do a better job getting students involved. Yale pulled the plug on student hijinks after that terrible day when a woman got run over in the parking lot . It hasn’t been the same since.

Pantelis, is the #1 slot back on Stanford football team.
McDonough, is the #1 LED hybrid DL/LB for Iowa State.
I believe both teams start next week. Go Eli’s

Sean Sullivan is marked as the starter for Rice. As the Left Tackle for the Owls
Alvin Gulley is the 2nd string D Line for the Northern Illinois Salukies
Clay Paterson is 2nd string Defensive Tackle for Stanford as is Braylon Thompson as a DB
Shamus Florio is the 1st string Punter for Boston College. And holder on extra points. Ben Mann is the LS .
I hope they all do well. Wish they were still at Yale.

Nice to the Saints Game the other day. Mason Tipton, had a few catches and had a solid game. At the end of the 3rd quarter Jonathan Mendoza, came in and did a great job at left tackle. After a catch by Tipton, Mendoza was there to help him up after the play.
