Yale outgained Cornell today, 361 to 278. Yale lost because of their two interceptions and their 10 penalties for 81 yds, compared to zero turnovers for Cornell and 5 penalties for 46 yards.
No longer having one of the best running backs in Yale football history (Josh) is of course the reason our running attack is so ineffective compared to last season. It looks like the defense is again off to a slow start. We lost our best pass rusher, Ezekiel Larry, to the transfer portal but there’s still a lot of talent for McGowen to work with. Poor tackling seems to be a continuing early season problem. which is probably why Yale has had difficulty beating Cornell, even in these recent seasons when we have beaten Harvard four straight times. It was pleasing to see Hewitt improve dramatically in the second half. No doubt it wasn’t easy to take over for Dante on such short notice. He showed poise and confidence after that costly first interception. I agree with SOE and believe Hewitt has the skills to become a fine starter but of course hope Dante can get back soon. For now the running back and linebacker positions are the bigger concerns.
Larry had used all of his Ivy eligibility. Pitts was all-time Yale Football, but I thought the running game looked better then last week. I agree the Defense was not elite. In spite of the ints we need to find a way to reduce the TO points to FG’s instead of 7’s. Penalties make it very difficult. I thought the play calling and lack of discipline were glaring. The QB threw well between the hash and he has good foot speed. We are going to have to get back to taking care of our responsibilities like the captain called for.
And my dream of a perfect regular season goes to dust again for the 66th year in a row (last one 1960)…
Haha Billy – here’s to Mike Pyle! Kinda crazy it’s been that long
I believe Hewitt is the grandson of Bill Leckonby who was a member of that undefeated 1960 team.
I only saw the first half and thought the defense was playing well and we could easily come back. Obviously penalties, especially the usual pass interference penalties, usually on 3rd down, and turnovers are hard to overcome.
We’ve seen this movie before though, and usually are still in contention going into the Harvard game. Looking forward to next week.
We have indeed seen it before. But it’s hard to run the Ivy table; 6-0 is now almost 100% required. We “should” — especially with Dante — beat Brown, Columbia, and Penn. We”ll see about the Tigers.
Hopefully the annual stumble against Dartmouth = this year’s vs. Cornell. I’m flying in from Seattle for the Dartmouth game.

The difference from last year, aside
That we no longer have one of the greatest running backs in Yale history, is the play of the lines. Can’t run the ball. Can’t stop the run.

Yale did win an Ivy Championship in 2019 with a great QB, two great receivers, and a porous defense. Similar to what we have seen so far. They did have a great back in Zane Dudek, but he was hobbled with injuries much of the time.
I’m hoping this years defense will get better and the O line will at least pass protect and maybe a rotation of backs will improve the running game.
Dartmouth is now super important.
Gentlemen; the entire squad needs some instruction on how to tackle. The linebackers were out of a position, a great deal more than half the time.the big red made the right adjustments had halftime. Our coaching staff made zero adjustments on defense.
The secondary coach really needs to instruct the defensive backs on staying with a defender who comes into their own space. overall a very disappointing performance at best.
Watching the Stanford Georgia Tech game. Good to see David Pantelis and Nico Brown contribute.
Spencer Merman Playing for Georgia Tech
Why happened to Dante Reno, that he couldn’t play against Cornell.?
Left elbow injury. Nothing else we know of — far as I know
Sure wish there was some comment on how severe Dante’s injury is.
