Yale 24 Columbia 10

Harvard was up 17-0. Now 17-10. Is Dartmouth making another one of their miraculous comebacks? If Harvard wins Yale controls its own destiny. If Harvard wins today and Yale wins out Yale would be Ivy champs. Go Harvard!

Just to clarify, what I really meant is Yale would get the automatic bid to the playoffs. They would still share the Ivy Championship with Harvard, assuming they win their next two games.

All of us know that over-confidence can result in a dream-killing defeat. That said… are not our chances vs the Bears and Tigers shiny? They’re both 3-4, the Providencians haven’t won in league.
I do fear the seemingly mighty Crimson. OTOH… we are rounding into form pretty splendidly. If our D holds strong vs. the Cantabridgians, we can win it… it might take a page or two from Coach Reno’s trusty trick playbook.

What a great day, I was able to see some old friends and meet some new ones. It’s amazing how quickly these seasons go by. I feel this season, could be one for ages.
I’ll admit I’m a defensive kinda guy. I like this defense. They seem to get better each week. # 7 Webster, if you get focused on your tasks. . Be more like #2 Larry or #4 Kamara.!! Lights out on your potential young man. To #8 Grant keep on getting after it. This was one of your better games . 👍.
I was going to go to the Brown game, but it’s on ESPN plus. But also on NESN which I have. Like to record it to watch later on. By the way SNY is carrying The Princeton game as well.

Not trying to nit pick on an outstanding defensive effort, but Yale gave up a few huge plays today by getting burned on the blitz. I think Yale needs to be a bit more judicious in their blitz calls. Their front four can provide tremendous pressure on their own, especially when Larry is in.

SOE, you nit pick all you want , I just appreciate the bend but don’t break , where with all of this unit.
Like the offense from the start of this season. Each side has grown steadily. They are not finished growing at all. But they have improved.
Onto Brown, Go Bulldogs.
Not to mention I met Kingman yesterday, he is a big boy.

Just when I’ve gotten used to the all blue uniforms, and the white with blue pants, now they want me to get used to football players wearing shorts. Oh well, as long as they win, I guess.

I was wondering what happened to the blue helmets? If they’re going to wear the all blue uniforms, they should use the blue helmets too.

SoE, you recently mentioned portal 15 row 23. Assuming that’s aisle A, and if you’ve sat there for a number of years, in the past I have unwittingly sat across the aisle from you.
I used to be in 15 A Row 23 Seats 20-23 for many years, up through 2019. Moved out of the area and no longer attend in person, unfortunately.
Met some good folks in that section of the Bowl; would’ve been nice to say hello to you, had I only known!. John Pagliaro was a ticket-holder a row or two in front of me one year.

It is aisle A, but it was just a random assignment for that game. Still we’ve both been to so many games over the years we must have been in close proximity many times. It’s nice to build a Yale fan community so if you ever make it to another game let’s try to meet-up outside portal 15.

Absolutely! If I get back to the area during the season and can attend a game in-person, I’ll send a msg to this board to try to meet up with you and any others from the Eli Faithful who cares to.

Random observations from a few minutes of viewing:
* Doesn’t look like there were actually 21k in attendance, that would require one-third of all seats occupied — too many nearly-empty sections for that to be true. But still, there was probably 3X as many as is seen today….12,000 seems about right.
* No “scorebug” on the screen — it made me realize how dependent upon that I’ve become when watching football on TV!
* Yale Bowl grass in good shape on opening day.
* I-formation – something you don’t see any more.
* Uniform differences: “real” shoulder pads, and “real” football pants (not bike shorts).
Thanks for the momentary diversion from the modern world!

The field looked terrific. I think this era uniforms were Yale’s best. I liked the blocked Y and the Bulldog profile over the Y logo on the sleeves. Also they had a decent sized band and students actually came to the game!

A couple of attendance numbers struck me.
Penn – 35k
Princeton -19k

Seems strange. I know Penn was good back then, but Princeton so much less? Shows how a long great rivalry had lost its luster after the sixties.

‘Twas a very very long trim ago, but I remember 40,000 for Princeton in the late ’60s and I think 30,000 in ’84.

I attended the Penn game in 2000. The weather was good, Penn came in leading the league. The Elis handed the Quakers their only loss in the Ivy League in that game. Eric Johnson was terrific.
I wasn’t at the Princeton game — which we lost on a late Tiger TD, I believe — but I want to say that the weather was foul. The weather factor may explain the attendance differential.

I actually went to a couple of games in 2000, Holy Cross at the Bowl and Dartmouth on the road. We were back in CT for a wedding and vacation. I still owe the town of Hanover, NH for a parking ticket.

That brings back some memories, The cheerleaders actually moving and interacting with the fans. The band having a decent amount of musicians with 3 Tubas.!!! 21,000 for Dayton.!!
If Yale would just do a proper job of advertising and understand the logistics of the community and area. It could very well be that way again. Once you get rid of the Colgate Coven.!!

SOE, I’ve been pounding that drum for a long time. Kamara , is to talented an athlete not to utilize his talents, On offense. Why not Yale used Melvin Rouse as a running back/ wideout on offense. Not a lot but as a change of pace. I don’t get it.
I find Ostrosky tiresome in his capacity as offensive coordinator.!! At times he’s just plaine OFFENSIVE.!! Stinks

I gotta be honest. I too was struck by the crowd and band in this video. It’s not huge or anything, but it’s a decent respectable audience as opposed to the smattering of parents and family that seem to attend today. This weekend had a scrimmage feel. My theory as to why this Dayton game had fans: you still had enough folks alive in 2000 who were fans before the 1AA split, and they were hungry for wins after some lean years in the 90s. If you look at the crowd shots the age demo is clear. Also this game was the first after the 99 Harvard game which was about the best game at the Bowl in my lifetime.

I’m still just surprised as I thought the apathy has been pretty flat for a generation. Maybe y’all are onto something with the leadership issues.

Opening day in the Beckett era was always Youth Day. Lots of vendors and activities outside the main gate, tons to do and see, tickets given out to local youth groups and teams, and a festive atmosphere.
The current administration seems to want to treat all sports equally (“equitably”?) — they put as much (or less?) promotional effort into the football program as they put into the women’s fencing team. Translation: zero.

They knew how to get people in the stands. They didn’t gouge the public for every penny. Kids 12 and under got in free, you were allowed to bring in an unopened beverage. Free parking $20.00 now. Like Yale needs the money. You could leave bowl and come back in . Without having to pay for another ticket. You could bring in your own food.
This Colgate Covin, broke what didn’t have to be fixed. People can’t afford to come to games now a days . Colgate people have no idea of what THEY RUINED.!! NONE.!! Stunods

It truly is sad. I remember a tuba player on a unicycle. That was hilarious and impressive at the same time. Surprised that they can’t get more kids in the band.?
I remember when the band would encompass the captains on the coin flip, playing bright college years.!!

I remember* the Columbia band back in the 70s and 80s being so much smaller than the Yale band; the Columbia band was such a rag-tag group that couldn’t really make any formations. But they stood out to me because they were so small compared to the rest of the Ivy bands. As marching bands go, Columbia’s seemed…feeble.
That Columbia band was about twice as large as the current YPMB.

* – you are admitting you’re old when you start an online post with “I remember”

They were there to watch the worst FG that ever won a game. It was, I believe, about 25-30 yards, the Harvard kicker popped it up almost straight up, and it floated just over the crossbar no more than a couple of yards behind the goalposts.

My first reaction, sitting in that end zone was, he missed it. No such luck. 10-7 Harvard. It still bothers me.

Move back the starting times for the games. Give the students a party zone like they had during the box truck era. All the other suggestions previously made on this blog will help – free parking and free tickets

Agreed on all counts, but my question is, how down is our attendance vs. the Ivy League as a whole? I honestly don’t know.
Again, the University needs to do everything possible to help attendance and interest… it seems to me another factor in the decline at the Bowl is the general increased public obsession with “major college” football. Also, possibly, though there’s no game-day competition, an even greater preoccupation with the NFL than before.

Ivy attendance overall continues to slide downward, but Yale used to be at the top of the league for attendance, even excluding The Game.
No longer the case.

Over the last 15 years, Ivy average attendance has gone from 10,000 to 7,000 — a 30% drop. Yale’s average (excluding The Game) went from 15,500 to 4,400, a 70% drop.
Granted, the announced attendance in the Beckett years was inflated, as mentioned earlier. Even if we go with 9,000 as the “real” attendance back then, which I think is realistic, it’s a 50% drop.

Thank you voy vey.
Yeah, it stinks. It would be one thing if the team was awful, but it’s consistently good.
I do remember even in my WYBC days of the mid-’80s, complaints from sports-fan students that our student body just didn’t care about sports. But so many more showed up back then, plus I gather support for men’s basketball is superb now. Starting Saturday games at noon is a huge detriment to student attendance. They study all week, then Friday night is party night.
