Notes on the Win over Maine

The Bulldogs came out fired up for their home opener on Saturday with Kurt Rawlings leading Yale on a gutsy scoring drive on the first possession.  Long passes to Shohfi and Howland set Yale up in good position before Rawlings finished it off with a one yard scamper into the end zone.  Rawlings sported an elbow brace on his left elbow (in addition to his usual knee brace) and the nagging injury appeared to cause him some pain on that initial drive.

Shofi and Klubnik were no match for the Black Bears’ secondary.  Shohfi finished with ten catches for 124 yards, while Klubnik added six catches for 85 yards and three touchdowns.  Garrett White and CJ McCord saw extended action at the third wide receiver position.  At the tight end spot, Howland had three catches for 69 yards and Roman made his first career catch for 23 yards on a crucial drive.

Aside from Charles’ touchdown run, the offensive line struggled with run blocking.  Alston was only able to average 2.4 yards per carry with his longest run being just 11 yards.  Dudek and Lamar did not suit up.  High snaps plagued the Bulldogs in the first half, but Cepalia was able to clean it up for the second half.  Pass blocking was hit or miss, yet for the most part, Rawlings had a couple of seconds on each play to get rid of the ball.  Rawlings has great awareness of where pressure is coming from and can often escape from the first pass rusher.  The player of the game was easily Rawlings who threw for 306 yards and three touchdowns.

The defense had their best outing of the year on Saturday.  Two big scoring plays from the Black Bears kept the contest close in the second half.  Tackling and pursuit were much improved from a week ago, although poor tackling did lead to one of the long scoring plays.  On the other Maine touchdown, the running back ran by Awodiran for a long reception as Awodiran was caught peeking back to the quarterback.  Rodney Thomas had his best career game with five solo tackles and two passes defended that were nearly interceptions.  Dathan Hickey made solid improvements from a week ago.  Dixon and Henson were not seen in the secondary.  Hunter Roman was stellar once again and Matthaie, Keeler and Moore performed well along the defensive line.

Galland was 5/5 on extra points and averaged 40.4 yards per punt.  He also handled much of the kickoff duty and we’re unsure if Blake Horn was hurt or if Reno simply wanted to squib it to throw off the Maine kick return team.  The Yale Bowl’s grass was in poor shape and several young players without much experience playing on the surface were slipping.

Yale faces off against the Dartmouth Big Green at 6 PM ET on Friday at the Bowl.

Would love to see Yales offense light up the green this coming Friday. I’m sure it will be a tough game and hopefully Coach CaHill has some wrinkles up his sleeve to throw this defense off balance
We owe it to ourselves to make up for last year‘s loss that should not have been a loss.

Let’s go BIG BLUE let’s light them up and take it to the Indians

Dartmouth offense a big threat to yale. Multiple formations run the ball drown your throat. Big offense line .Long pass plays. QBthat love to run.Much better offense than Maine.Defense mean big fast .Yale better find out if the other freshman running backs can play. We know about Charles and Alston but if they get hurt where are we. Remember one back offense everyone knows who getting the ball.Lets see what McElwain and Frommer can do.I know Frommer is listed as a LB but the kid is a good running back let him run.Good luck Friday Yale.

@Anonymous… from my heart to your keyboard. Frommer would be killer at RB!

Such a fierce competitor! SMH

Yale coaches did a great job prepping the team last week for Maine. Yale will have to work even harder to beat Dartmouth. Dartmouth has been a stumbling block for Yale for years. They beat 3-0 Yale teams in 2013, 2015 and 2017. Reno and staff need to solve the Dartmouth puzzle this week or their hopes of repeating as Ivy League Champions will be greatly diminished.

I don’t like the thought of Reno and Co. prepping for Dartmouth on a short week. Hopefully the Sand Bowl is a strong advantage

I think the administration should maximize our advantage. Water the field heavily Friday night and bring in the polo ponies for an evening frolic. The Dartmouth skill players will be helpless and Tony always says his guys would be willing to play on asphalt or quicksand.

29.5 billion dollar endowment and a mud field on national television.

I suggest the President assign a task force of Vice Presidents, Associate Provosts, and Assistant Athletic Directors to produce a study on the topic for review and comment, and possible action by the University at the appropriate time.

Wait…..I forgot ……the funds for the new Fieldturf have already been donated. That must be it, a wise and prudent fiscal manager decided to ignore even minimal field maintenance the last two years since the grass was headed for the dump.

Who cares about the players or the image of Yale football.

To date this will be the best team that Dartmouth has faced. I think a lot of people are underestimating Yale. This team has grown leaps and bounds since the Holy Cross Game.
Which let’s not forget that this team did not get blown out by holy cross, and in fact should’ve won the game. As Reno has stated , They got smacked in the face. That was including the coaching staff.
I’m looking forward to this game , feel like these pups have cut their baby teeth. Ready to take a bite outta the Greens ass.!!! Roll Dogs.!!
