camp primer

Preseason camp is finally here and the number one ranked Bulldogs seek to reclaim the Ivy League crown after a disappointing 2018 campaign.

Quarterbacks: Kurt Rawlings returns to spearhead the Yale offense after a leg injury derailed his season. The Elis can’t afford to lose Rawlings again, so he must limit his downfield running and look to throw the ball out of bounds when there are no open receivers. Griffin O’Connor is more than capable as a backup and will be well prepared in the event of an injury to Rawlings.

Projected Starter: Kurt Rawlings

Running Backs: The running back position has arguably more talent and depth than any other position on this team. Alan Lamar, Zane Dudek and Spencer Alston will pose challenges for opposing defenses with their varying styles. Dudek is a game-changer when fully healthy, while Lamar and Alston can pound defenses with their strength and power.

Projected Starter: Alan Lamar

Wide Receivers: JP Shohfi and Reed Klubnik combine to form the top receiving duo in the Ivy League. Who will step-up to be the third wide receiver this season? Rouse, Carrington, and Sandifer all seem to be likely candidates, although Seniors Caden Herring and Garrett White could overtake them on the depth chart with a strong preseason.

Projected Starters: JP Shohfi, Reed Klubnik, and Melvin Rouse

Tight End: Reno shocked fans last season when he announced JJ Howland as the starting tight end. Howland had a solid season both in run blocking and pass catching. D. Major Roman can stretch the field vertically and possesses fantastic hands. Look for Howland and Roman to continue to make major strides in 2019.

Projected Starter: JJ Howland

Offensive Line: The Yale offense will live and die by the play of its offensive line this season. The offensive line struggled to pick up blitzes and was often pushed around by strong bullrushers in 2018. There is too much experience and talent on this line to not dominate in 2019. Hinish and Tribble will likely battle it out for the starting guard position, while a number of talented underclassmen have the potential to unseat established starters.

Projected Starters: Cameron Warfield, Jacob Hinish, Steven Cepalia, Sterling Strother, Dieter Eiselen

Defensive Line: The defensive line simply must create more penetration in 2019. Matthaei and Keeler have to improve their consistency and production at defensive tackle to aid a linebacking corps that struggled to make tackles in 2018. The defensive ends have to contain outside runs and get more hits on the quarterback to take pressure off of the defensive backs. Beyond Moore and Callender, there are several defensive ends worthy of playing time including Sean Kissel, Reid Nickerson, Christian Sampleton and Oso Ifesinachukwu.

Projected Starters: Devin Moore, Spencer Matthaei, Josh Keeler and Charles Callender

Linebackers: We will likely see a rotation of linebackers once again this season as there are a number of talented players that are nearly equivalent in production. John Dean, Ryan Burke, Blake Hill and Micah Awodiran all have the ability to start at inside linebacker. Noah Pope, Jordan Carey or Miles Oldacre could start on the outside, although Oldacre seems to be a better candidate for the strong safety position and remains listed as a defensive back on the roster.

Projected Starters: Ryan Burke, John Dean, and Noah Pope

Defensive Backs: The defensive backs were by far the most criticized unit in 2018. Defenders refused to play the ball in the air and could not make necessary downfield tackles. Without a drastic change in the secondary, we will fall prey to skilled aerial attacks. The competition for the starting corner and strong safety positions will be the most intriguing aspects of fall camp.

Projected Starters: Malcolm Dixon, Jaelin Alburg, Miles Oldacre and Rodney Thomas

Strother took first team reps at center in the Spring. Garigola and Warfield were the tackles. Heard Schuller also had a strong spring and could challenge for one of the tackle spots. That would leave Cepalia, Hinish and Triblle challenging for the last guard spot. Like the rest of the offense the Line has quality depth this year.

Yale has a boatload of talent at RB. Assuming Dudek has fully recovered from his injury, I think he will be receiving the most playing time at RB. Anxious to see Josh McKenzie with the ball; in terms of the number of offers from Power 5 schools, he is the most highly rated RB Yale has successfully recruited in many years.
Interesting there was no mention in the Camp Primer of the Pat Nauert the DT transfer from the Air Force Academy.

That’s right. Though he’s listed as an RB on the Yale roster. He’s able to play a number of positions. He can be a game changer so I would be surprised if the coaches don’t try to get the ball in his hands a lot.

I hope the coaches follow through on their statements that they intend to get less predictable on offense. Dudek and Lamar need to be on the field at the same time alot.
Hopefully the coaching assignment changes on defense will have the desired impact. We need pressure from all angles up front to help the pass defense. Our linebackers and defensive backs have talent. They need better coaching and a good scheme..

I still remember, Rudy Green, Dick Jauron, Tyrell Hennings . Tommy Doyle. In the Flexbone.. tearing teams up. Work that into your Play. Rawlings could handle that.

John We think the same way. I made the same comment a few months ago . We like the old days a cloud of dust and a hi ho silver. With the running backs Yale has this would work. Time will tell if this happens. Their a rumor going around that practice will be closed, If this is being done for a new offense so be it.

YALE RECRUIT :

Time for some helpful person to update the 2020 recruits list.
Also, I’m sure we’d welcome reports from those attending the practices.

Jeffery M’Ba athlete

France has just decommited from U Virginia. NCAA clearing house.. Get him into Yale . Go to Choate for a year

To whom it may concern, (no one). Yale could do so much better. Sad truth is. . They do things half assed. Not thought out all the way through. Case in point Yale Bowl opens with NO REST Rooms

I am thinking that Coach Reno realizes that recruiting a highly ranked class does not necessarily translate into championships. What development occurs or not, is crucial. I think that we would all agree that the current team should (baring injuries, or maybe despite them) should win the Ivy League. Otherwise, Coach Reno’s record will be just OK. And maybe he will be looking forward to moving on.

As I see it, the Dartmouth game is the key to the whole season. If Yale beats Dartmouth at Hanover, the the season will look really promising, but if Yale gets clobbered again or fails to hold a lead again, we can expect another third or fourth place finish.

First the clam diggers now kids must pay to. What a bunch of crap. What is yale doing. Is this how they pay for the new field .Next will be the parking again another five dollars to park on dirt. Yale you want people to come to the games not stay away. Yale get your head out of your ass,Do something to change this.

You could always contribute to the Football Association or buy season tickets to all of the games. Of course, neither will get you into practice or even a weekly update from someone “in the know.” Is the objective to have even poorer attendance at the Yale Bowl than there is now? And then what?

Any thoughts on Holy Cross after their game with Navy? I saw some potential for a passing game against Yale but a weakness against Yale’s running game.

A lot of people are tired of tony the coach reno. how can you close the scrimmage to the fans who go to all the games and let special people in that go to one game a year. That stinks. I hope they fall flat on there face.

Does Yale have a football team. I wouldn’t know. I haven’t heard a damn thing . Assanine
Not a smart way to build a fan base. Or to peak interest in your program.

What does YALE stand for.? Yes , another, Lousy, Encounter. !!!.
Hmm alienate your true fans. Satisfy a narcissistic Head Coach, a new athletic Director trying to change the face of a University. That doesn’t need to changed.
Moronic

Why is it impossible to find someone, acceptable to the coaching staff, who can brief the remaining faithful on a regular basis? Other schools in the league have such a person. Why not us? It is understood that the designated liaison would have to keep mum about injuries and “secret weapons,” but this dearth of official news is both discouraging and self-defeating.

gentlemen; the thought of closed practices for those who wish to attend and support our blue squad borders on the ridiculous, and runs counter culture to the mindset of prior coaches with more distinction including mr. oliver,mr. pont and mr.cozza. the bear squad with a new coach and system has open practice obviously to create interest and support.

The next logical step is to make the games themselves closed. That way, we can keep muttering to ourselves all the way to Thanksgiving.

OK, we get it…Yale is doing a terrible job marketing their product. Can we actually talk about football and not some dixie land band that isn’t there anymore????

well they played a scrimmage on Saturday, have one against Brown this Saturday and then a final one on the following Saturday, but no silly band out side the stadium…..The season is RUINED!

Time for the authors to start a new thread only half the 40 posts are about how the program, coach and venue suck

Hey..!!! Is that all you got.? We haven’t heard BOO. About the on goings of thid team.
We are not privy to information about this team.. So what ever tid bits would be welcome.
Let me make this clear , I could care less about bands..
So if you have something to say . please enlighten thank you

So Hawk,
Who are the current two-deep on offense and defense from
your insider’s perspective? Any surprises in camp so far – pleasant or unpleasant? Will you give the fans a report on the Brown scrimmage this Saturday? All would be appreciated.

I’d be happy to be wrong, but here’s what I expect to learn about the three scrimmages. There was blocking. There was tackling. Some players ran with the ball; others passed the ball, while still others caught (or failed to catch) the ball. Points were scored. Some players wore blue jerseys; others wore white jerseys, while still others wore red bibs (over their jerseys) that really angered the bulls.

OK, the lines….lots of rotation. I believe Sterling was the only one who didn’t play. D-line looked OK, but same as the oline, lots of rotation. Is # 95 the airforce transfer? He looked good.

look guys these kids are supposed to be in shape am i correct. Then why the hell are they rotated every other play. Thats wrong you never know who the person next to you is .Your trying to put a unit to play together to be on the same page when playing defense. They did this last year in and out and the defense stunk.Put a cohesive unit together on both sides of the ball and let them play. That goes for the secondary to,

Not only was there no cohesion on D, but the substituted players were still looking to the sidelines almost (?) to the point when the ball was snapped! They were not set and it showed! A few strategic situational substitutions (3rd and long) is one thing, constant rotational substitution is another. Ridiculous!

Did this happen in 2017 when the defense stymied some of the best offenses in the league? If not, what changed? Coaching staff? Talent on defense? But not Reno.

It comes down to talent and coaching Jordan Stevens is back where he belongs coaching the defense. Time will tell it all comes down to the DB backs if they play well we should be fine. It looks like we will not have a scoreboard for the first game of the season and beyond same all story Yale screw up again.

Is this the first year that every single game will be available online or on TV (I assume Harvard will be on TV)? Since I live in Arizona, that’s important. When I moved to Arizona in 1990 I used to have to call the press box to get a score.

ESPN+ is broadcasting 8 games. Richmond/Harvard have not been announced as to what the coverage will be.

Ok , so how did Yale look, what was the overview of team 147.? Really have to say I feel disconnected from this team. The proverbial on the outside looking in. I always felt like a little kid at Christmas time. You have torn the heart out of my chest.

The only decent updates on the football program are coming from the Yale Daily News. Sign up for their headline service then open the ones that interest you. Today they ran a fine story featuring news on the preseason and featuring Rawlings and Shofi.

The communications from the football association are the same cookie cutter solicitations they have been sending for decades with no content. The latest was unattributed, even though
the pronoun “I” was used in the text.
Sloppy, lazy and all too common.

Are we or are we not getting a new scoreboard this year? Will the ex football players who are in charge of this blog please let us know.

How does one access the games on NESN and the Richmond game? Are they free?
I’ve heard that the new AD and her countless assistants will transmit information at the Bowl by means of flash cards.
Those privileged to enter the Bowl could, if they chose to do so, tell us what’s up with the scoreboard.

gentlemen; looking forward to comments about our squad’s progression at the bear scrimmage this afternoon.
