The worrisome part for me is Yale got worse as the game went on. I expected HC to be able to throw the ball, they have a good QB and everyone throws well against Yale. But where was the defensive line? They ran through us with ease. And it seems like they converted every 3rd and long negating the sacks we had.
The offense started with two drives into HC territory and 0 points. I knew we were in trouble then.
While I don’t think we can blame this loss on HC playing two games and this being our opener, maybe we can blame the margin. HC would still be favored over Yale if they played a month from now, but I doubt Yale would look so inept.
I hate to agree with some of the doomsayers on here, but unless Yale and the league makes a real commitment and adds an 11th game and starts the season a couple of weeks earlier there are going to be more losses like this in our future. Or we will have to schedule D-3 type teams like Harvard and Princeton for the opener.

Offense needs to make adjustments and exploit mismatches. Defenses are adjusting to Grooms without any significant changes by Yale
We knew going into this game that HC is simply a much better team. They are better coached and have stronger and faster players. They would have beat us even without the advantage of already playing 2 games. It’s only the first game of the season but it’s hard not to be very disappointed with today’s peformance. Our defense looks worse than last year. The much heralded DL was being manhandled by the HC offensive line. There is a lack of impact players in the LB positions and it appears Reno still hasn’t figured out how to improve the pass coverage. The offensive line is also an area that looks weaker than last season which likely means Grooms will not have any better pass protection than he had last year. He is still interception prone and poor pass protection will exacerbate this problem. We missed Spencer Alston due to injury? However the one positive for Yale was the running of Josh Pitsenberger. He is a powerful runner with impressive cutting ability. He has the potential to be a star running back for Yale.
I felt that this was going to happen. 1st of 10 . Lots of room for improvement. Reno , and his brain trust will put something together.
HC was making Grooms uncomfortable all day. I did not like his mechanics, delivery was all off. Very concerning to me.
Pitsenberger, was a welcome relief , see him grow as the season goes on. As all of them transition to the next game.

First of all yale is the only team in the league to loss sat.Yale was not very competitive today on both sides of the ball. How could you be with boring football. Yale better find another QB Grooms is not the answer at QB. This was a embarrassment to Yale the coaches the players and fans. What is it lack of talent or poor coaching take your pick. Yale better hit the reset button next weekend or this could be a long long season,

2006. Yale gets destroyed by San Diego in the opener and finishes 8-2. Let’s hope.
Holy Cross has some borderline stunning talent considering they were pretty bad not too long ago. They were simply the better and more talented team. That being said, it was concerning that Yale wasn’t even really competitive. At certain points it looked like men vs boys, and given the talent Yale reels in, that should never be the case. This team will need to improve quickly, as Cornell apparently looked better than expected today.
Going back to last season this makes the third bad game for Grooms in a row.
Grooms wasn’t great against Harvard last year, but I don’t think he was bad. Yale scored 31 points which should have been enough.
Gentlemen; absolutely numb after our blue performance against a good crusader squad. Arm tackling horrendous; linebackers and defensive backs play less than exemplary. Coach Reno will have to pull the trigger and make some tough decisions this week on which team he puts on the field against the carnelians. The Cantab coach has no problem pulling the trigger when he sees the obvious. Mr. Austin’s return should help in the meantime hint numbers 31 and 34 should be lugging the pigskin.
Cant make those throws nor errors…during the off-season, Yale coaches spent a lot of time & effort recruiting these offensive weapons….although young many of them have won state championships & many games in high school…it’s time to play the pups!

Gentlemen; if there are quality underclassmen at the linebacker position time to pull the trigger and play. Also, with the style of play implemented by the first game unless changed maybe it’s time for a drop back quarterback.
Goodness – it’s one week into a long season with a new offense scheme and young defense. The team has been through numerous live reps along with 3 scrimmages – unfortunately we have sustained several injuries through the pre-season at all positions. I applaud Yale for scheduling a difficult opponent – favorite to win the Patriot League again which give 65 full scholarships – versus a team just for the W so we all feel good for the next week or so.
Let’s give it a few weeks before we make any decisions about this team.
Also, the coaches now know who can play at this level. I have seen more parents of QB/RB/WR who just threw over and ran by opponents with ease in high school believing this is going to just happen again at next level – it just doesn’t. In addition to the difference in size and physicalality, the speed and techniques required of the college game is a significant step up and thus, why very few “pups” are ready to play at programs such as Yale, Harvard, Princeton and Dartmouth.
Pups playing early only occurs at other 4 Ivys as just unable to attract same type of athlete and thus, why these programs have <5% chance of ever winning the Ivy League in Football.

This blog is not the place to be reasonable (I’m Joking). We fans, and I include me, like to panic, blame the coaches, and make every loss the end of the world. There are no more passionate fans than the very few Yale football fans left that live and die with each game.
