Spring Updates

Men’s Basketball fell to Texas A&M in the first round of March Madness in an 80-71 contest. Congrats to Coach Jones for another phenomenal season in which the Bulldogs captured both the regular season and post-season championships.

Jackson Hawes continued to elevate his draft stock with an impressive showing at the NFL Combine. Hawes measured 6’4.5″, 253 lbs., and ran a 4.82 40-yard dash with a stellar 34.5″ vertical jump. Hawes could potentially be a late round draft selection for a team looking for a solid blocker with additional upside as a receiving threat. If Hawes somehow falls out of the draft process, he will definitely be scooped up as an undrafted free agent with an opportunity to prove his worth in a preseason camp.

If you missed the April 5th Blue-White Scrimmage as most likely did, there are still two additional dates open to the public on April 12th (11:30 AM) and April 19th (1 PM).

Some positions of concern in the offseason:

QB – Grant Jordan surprised most fans by earning the starting nod in 2024 and performed remarkably well in his lone season. With Jordan gone, it’s back to the drawing board with McCaughey, Howe and Fleharty. McCaughey was the star in the victory over Holy Cross before a letdown in the Cornell game. The Cornell loss can’t be attributed to McCaughey alone as the offensive line was manhandled, the special teams units put Yale in an early hole and the defense was torn to shreds by Jameson Wang. Howe saw some playing time in that ugly Cornell game but failed to ignite much of a spark for the offense. Reno is very optimistic for the future development of Fleharty as a true dual-threat quarterback, so it will be very interesting to see his improvement throughout the off-season.

WR – The wide receivers’ room hasn’t been this concerning in years. Pantelis, Nenad, Shipp and Felton cannot be easily replaced, although some have speculated that Shipp might be able to return as a fifth-year. Jaxton Santiago could become the centerpiece of Yale’s aerial assault as a big-bodied (6’3″, 215 lbs.) possession receiver. Beyond Santiago, there is little returning production with Nico Brown and Garon Kemp seeing some action in 2024. The cabinet is not bare, but Yale will really need to focus on wide receiver development in the offseason to stay relevant in the Ivy hunt for 2025.

TE – The loss of Yates and Foster dampers the mood on the returning pass catching production, while Mann and Belk were standouts on special teams who have also graduated. Mermans was used extensively in run blocking and will need to improve his route running and catching abilities to become a true featured tight end. A number of freshmen and sophomores will need to step up as receiving threats to reestablish this as a position of strength.

LB – The linebacker position experienced the most significant decline in performance from 2023 to 2024. Had Vaughn or Moore been in the mix at linebacker in 2024, there’s no question that Yale would have secured a share of the title. If Yale cannot develop one star in Phoenix Grant, Steven Partin, Joseph Barry, Melik Williams, Eddie Palumbo or Joe McCord with another two as serviceable starters, it will be a long season in New Haven. The Elis might be forced to gut their secondary depth by bringing down larger defensive backs such as Kamara or Eastep to piece together a respectable front seven on defense.

I couldn’t get out of the house today . Just to damn cold. Has anyone gone to the 2nd scrimmage today.? Hope everyone is well.

I read that Nolan Groves decommitted from The Yale men’s basketball team. On the Ivy League Voy site. From Remember It well. Nolan I’m sorry I won’t be able to see you on the court, wearing Yale Blue.

Howe has been starting most of spring ball. Heard from the players that Inumidun Ayo-Durojaiye could be returning back to Yale, as he has entered the portal again from Monmouth, as that will help the LB. Egodogbare was seen on crutches as so Cutler Adams.

Is McCoughey even enrolled this semester? He might be taking a semester off to gain eligibility for two more seasons at Yale.

Gentlemen; nice to see some activity on spring football would like to see more specificity on the issues relating to signal calling, wide receivers, and linebacker play based upon the scrimmages, although I appreciate the analysis presented

Our always savvy moderator makes an excellent point about the need to upgrade our linebacker situation. That could be the key to a successful season. I like the idea about bringing Kamara and Eastep forward to strengthen the position as we seem to have depth in the secondary. Kamara is a wonderful player who could probably play a number of positions on offense or defense. Combined with Pitzenberger I think that we have the best offensive and defensive players in the league. I’m glad to hear that the wisdom of Old Blue is still there to guide us.

Went to the scrimmage today, I can tell you that what I was looking for. The Offensive Line is intacted. 75, Bennett Tackle
70 Charron Gaurd Blum Center
69 Lewis Gaurd 54 St.Aubyn Tackle.
6 Freherty was out
13 McKoy got hurt off the hop on kickoff drills. Left ankle injury. He was limping around later on.
4 Cameron Price looked impressive at kickoff and in the backfield. (Speed). 28 Dahl looks like a bruiser.
17 Tattersall looked good, as did 18 Santiago was clutch as well.
they looked good . 3 Howe 15
No sign of most the 1st stringers ie: Pitsenberger, Kamara.
Egodogbare was out as well Met some of the parents and some recruits. Also 8 alums from various eras. It was a great day.

Hey SOE he did, Howe got the majority. Really nothing to report that was outstanding or impressive. Except the O line looked good. D backs looked good, DLine looked good putting pressure on the QB. Only half the squad was out there.

Recent tweet from Head Coach Tony Reno:
“To the schools who have been blatantly breaking @NCAAFootball rules and talking to our players over the last six months and most recently over the last week.

Tampering is illegal and we will hold you accountable. We are not afraid to make it public.”

Yale football is on Stanford Radar. Clay Patterson, David Pantelis this year. Now it’s don’t even wait. Grab the Bulldog Thompson.
What a sham.!!

Reno’s complaints will fall on deaf ears. College sports recruitment is now in the wild west where there is no governing body to enforce the rules; as if anyone even knows the rules anymore. The only sure thing is the Ivy teams will be negatively impacted to a much greater degree than than other FCS teams. Yale will likely never see the talent level that we enjoyed even after the formation of D1A and D1AA. Doubtful that we would have been able to recruit or retain players like Varga, Rawlings, Oluokun, et al. in today’s era of NIL money.

Yale has the ways and means. To do Whatever it wants to do. But empty threats and playing the victim is pussification of your product.
If Yale wanted they could be the Beast of the East. Start knocking heads together. Play an attractive 11 game schedule offer kids a NIL package. Be the creme de la creme. Yale doesn’t have to stay in the Ivy League. The mill stone around its Bulldogs neck. Yale can do whatever it wants. Time to roll up its sleeves and get after these SOB’S.!!

Gentlemen; the black hole a.k.a. Yale football sports information department appears to be widening in stark contrast to the cantabs who had their spring game televised and Sports information department who routinely commented on spring football progress and spring game.

YALE LOSES ANOTHER PLAYER-BREYLAN THOMPSON, DB. THIS TIME A TRANSFER TO STANFORD. ANY OTHERS?
