Yale 23 CCSU 22

Gentlemen; beautiful day at the bowl today. Our squad’s performance was a real head scratcher. Maybe I’m drinking my own bathwater, but the linebackers were nowhere to be found. Is the cupboard that bare? Is there no linebacker recruit in the past three years, including the incoming class which can step up and do a better job? The lack of linebacker play puts a lot of pressure on the safeties and defensive backs to make almost every tackle on a running play. As for the playcalling, whoever actually is calling the plays might be better served to turn over the responsibility to someone else assuming there is someone else capable.

It was nice to win, but this team is not inspiring confidence. The defense did play better the last three or four CCSU drives after being pushed around most of the first three quarters and giving up the obligatory long TD pass to a wide open receiver. Meanwhile, the offense seemed to go in reverse most of the second half. If not for the crucial INT we may have been shut out in the second half.

Also the offense, like in past years, cannot get first downs when needed to close out games. I think the only first down on Yale’s last two drives was via penalty. Still lots to improve on.

Looking at the glass half full, Yale showed improvement in all areas vs last week. The offensive line played much better setting up a strong running game and protecting the QB. The secondary had two interceptions. The punting and kickoffs were good. Jordan shows signs of being a dual threat. Overall, a good showing considering it was his first full game. I thought Yale defensive line put much more pressure on the QB this week, even if they had only one sack to show for it.

Looking at the half empty side, the deep ball down the middle still remains a problem for Yale to defend. The 47 yard CCSU TD pass looked like blown coverage just like the first defensive play of the Holy Cross game. Jordan also needs to improve his passing accuracy. Setting his feet before he throws would help. The missed 33 yard field goal nearly cost the game, so that needs to be cleaned up. McCaughey as not dressed for today’s game and had his left arm in a sling, so Yale is down to three QB’s.

There is no such thing as a bad win for this team. They are lucky to be 2-1 at this point. I’ll gladly take any win they get no matter how they get it.
Yale will need to show incremental improvement in all areas next week to beat Dartmouth, but they are definitely heading in the right direction.

Six hours after the game ended and still nothing on the Yale athletics website on the game.

Ccsu is better than people think. They have a lot of transfers, including a few from FBS programs. Their outstanding RB, Howard, is a transfer from Virginia Tech. I predict that they will end up the NEC champions.

Not to be snarky, BUT there’s this on our website, “His 64-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter, coupled with a good field goal for the extra point…”

As a longtime resident of Sugar Land in Ft Bend County, Texas, I’m pleased to brag on the fact three Ft Benders (Walker Warncke of Needville, Breylan Thompson of Missouri City and Josh Tarver of Richmond) on our team this year. Thompson’s strip sack of the Holy Cross QB was instrumental to our victory in the opener, and Tarver’s INT turned around the CCSU game yesterday. Warncke has played well on special teams.

I’d really like to hear what Tony has to say after games. Are press conferences available online?

Just wondering about Tre Peterson. I can only remember him getting a couple of touches this year. Is he recovering from an injury? If so, why let him have any carries at all. I always thought he was a great balance and contrast to Pitsenberger.

I believe the problem’s this year’s OL.Usually Pitsenberger and Denney have to fight for every inch, and that’s just not Peterson’s thing.

Looking forward to this Dartmouth game on Saturday. I believe that Yale will win.!! Go Bulldogs.!!

This is getting ridiculous, Thursday evening and no wright up about the biggest football game of the season.
