Yale 46 Penn 41

Rawlings great. Receivers (Shohfi and Klubnik) great. Dudek with a game that reminded us of two years ago.

Defense terrible. I’ve never seen a team convert more 3rd and 10+ yard passes than Penn did today. And some were way more than 10 yards. However, to give credit, the Ellis INT turned the game around.

Thank goodness we know how to recover onside kicks.

An offensive show we expected from the beginning of the season! With only four games left and two of them against Princeton and Harvard, the defense seems to get worse every week. Even Brown is making more progress.

Attendance was under 5,000. This team at 5-1 deserves more support. Please get off your asses and get to the bowl next week!

SOE. I’m starting to wonder if every game being available online is hurting attendance. Maybe not, but it sure seems that the launching of ESPN+ has coincided with a sharp drop in attendance. Not that Ivy attendance hasn’t been going downhill for a while.

Just a thought, and no complaint from me being in Arizona, but I would like to know how many people in the northeast watch these games online. And how much money Yale gets out of the deal.

Getting weary watching a team that appears to be talented, but poorly coached, especially on the defensive side. Even in 2017, it wasn’t until the end of the year that the defense seemed to be able to stop other teams on critical downs. Am I imagining this? Also, dumb penalties including taunting.

In response to the comment on only 5,ooo at the Bowl – not all of it, but I don’t see nearly as many families with kids. What’s with this rule about not leaving and coming back in. One of the draws when my kids were young was allowing them to run off steam, at least during half time.

Rodney Thomas not dressed, Noah Pope not dressed, the LB corps is depleted, and it shows. LB not being able to cover RB and TE on 9 routes has been a problem this year and last. DB’s getting burned — and not playing the ball — same story.
It was obvious from the opening series that Penn’s game plan was to throw deep, as often as possible. And most of the time, it worked.
Until it’s addressed, thats’ the blueprint for P and H to put up gaudy numbers against us (and Columbia, for that matter). It happened last year, and will happen again unless some drastic changes are made.

Consider this:
Penn’s offense didn’t score a single point against Columbia last week.
This week, against Yale: 6 TD’s, 521 yards, 30 first downs, almost 400 yards of passing, 10-of-15 on 3rd/4th down, 6 trips to red zone, all resulting in TD’s.
Ouch.

Penn successfully converted on 3rd and 10 or longer five times. McGowen needs to trouble shot this defensive collapse and make adjustments quickly in order to beat Columbia.

Maybe they should change the PA announcer’s script to “Make some noise, Bulldog Nation, Yale’s about to give up another 3rd down conversion!”

…The PA announcer, the endlessly blaring music, and the toxically unfunny Yale band’s halftime performances have made the game-day experience at the Bowl brutally obnoxious this season. Hope Yale reconsiders their options in those regards during the off-season.

…Kurt Rawlings in the best quarterback Yale has seen since Brian Dowling. Set aside all his stats for a moment and just consider the block he threw to spring Dudek for what turned out to be the winning score yesterday. Intangibles like that are the stuff by which games are won and legends are made.

…Too bad there will be so few people to remember it because there were so few people there to witness it. The 2010 Penn game at the drew over 22,000; yesterday there were under 5,000 (although, truthfully., I thought it looked like a few more than that). At the current rate of declination, within a decade Yale football will be drawing in the low hundreds. That is, of course, providing there is Yale football in the next decade, football being the evil male offspring of the patriarchy and its culture of toxic masculinity and whatnot.

…After watching the defense yesterday I think the best Yale can hope for is to split the remaining four games. I don’t think I have ever seen one team convert so many third-and-longs in one game, and some Penn receivers were almost comically wide open. I think Columbia and Brown are doable, especially if Rawlings & Company are as on fire as they were yesterday, but I fear Princeton and Harvard will torch that secondary mercilessly.. But you never know: that’s why they play the games. Right?

…Dudek FINALLY looked a little something like his 2017 self. Which was great. A little bit more hope going forward.

Agree about Rawlings, but want to give a shout out to Kelly Ryan who was a great QB, despite tearing up his knee he was a one man gang in 1987.

Attendance:
The AD had to know that no re-entry & no sale of beer inside the stadium would certainly deplete student attendance (and hurt the non-parent attendance as well). Are we to expect those same potential student tailgaters and attendees are going out on Saturday PM for a few sodas?
Defense:
Either the D coordinator can not teach, or the many of the “student” athletes unfortunately can not follow directions. The Penn game may have proven both are true. After watching yesterday, Yale would be better off putting in the best D back athletes they have and play man all day. How could it be worse than having opposing receivers with no defender in the TV screen!!!
Offense:
O line can wear down any opposing D line. The O can then hold their own against any team in the league. But without getting key defensive stops early in the game, it takes until the 4th quarter to reap the benefit of the size of the O line.
Two Point Try:
Head scratcher? First game for the Penn kicker. First kick was a near miss. Why try for 2 point play? Why not instead keep the pressure up on the new kicker by making him have to continue to make kicks to keep pace with Tuckerman.

Regarding the two point tries, the really foolish one was after Yale scored to make it 32-27. Instead of kicking for a 6 point lead, they went for two and failed.

So what would have happened after the Ellis INT, if Yale had not scored a TD and had to kick a FG. They would have only been up 8 points instead of 9. Big difference since 9 ponts means Penn would have to score twice.

The offense made it a moot point, but I wonder what the thinking was.

Lehigh gets a new video scoreboard yesterday and draws over 7,000 as a result. Yale gets one and treats it as a “surprise”. Yale athletic department needs to take marketing 101. Who is in charge of PR for Yale Athletics? Doesn’t seem like anyone is. They can’t even get any students to go to a game. Other than cheerleaders and band members I have seen a single Yale student at the games all year.

I’m glad the new video board is up – and earlier than expected (even though anything after the start of the season is a ‘fail’ at most any other school). A few thoughts, though:

1) Seeing the video board in action underscores the fact that they should have moved the scoreboard to the South end of the stadium during the last renovation, so that it’s not facing into the sun, thus washing out the display.

2) They need to figure out a way to keep the down-and-distance display on the screen more often. All we get from the static scoreboard is score, clock, and time-outs left. When it’s 3rd down and you look at the scoreboard to see the distance to go, all you see is the “3rd down bell” ringing while the announcer bellows about “Bulldog Nation,” with no way to see the yard line and yards-to-go.

3) I’m glad that they don’t litter the video board with paid advertisements, like most professional teams do.

4) Having said that, more replays of game action would be appreciated, rather than graphics of rotating “Y” and “P” letters after a big play has occurred.

In all, it’s an improvement (or, at least a step into the 2000’s). But there’s room for even more improvement.

3) I’m glad that they don’t litter the video board with paid advertisements, like most professional teams do.

It was only the first week. With the poor attendance how long before the athletic dept. is looking for a money maker?

I believe it’s been the same PA announcer for several years. Pathetically loud and abrasive like a 1910 carnival barker. Tremendous turn-off to students and Old Blues alike. Also, this 3rd down bell thing sounds like a demeaning disaster. This is supposed to appeal? Leave that kind of crap to minor league baseball games.

I second the poster who mentioned Kelly Ryan ’88 — Carm always said he and B.D. were the best QB’s he ever had. Will never forget his throwing for 426 yards vs. Army.

Yale is in the minor leagues (FCS) and needs to copy more techniques from minor league baseball to put fans in the seats, not less. And for what it’s worth I enjoy the Yale PA announcer. He does the hockey games too. Probably paid a pittance for it. We’re lucky to have him.

The poor coaching, inflated ticket and parking prices, charging for little ones to come in, and no bringing outside food and drink has been a real turnoff this season. As a father of a young one who I would like to immerse in Yale football, it just does not feel feasible. Something is lacking, doesn’t feel fan friendly. I have been going to games for past 25 years and I miss all the kids running around, the old timers with their LL bean totes and J Press dress, free parking, all this non sense with tailgating, etc. Beckett always made it attractive and inexpensive to come to the bowl on a beautiful fall Saturday. Not so much anymore. 🙁

Vicki Chun should have established a fan focus group before she implemented these changes. Again, its MARKETING 101.

Yale OL I totally agree, I feel like a unwelcomed family member. To many restrictions and rules. The food is horrible and lacking.
I’ve started to go to the Sacred Heart games . They have Hummel hotdogs and beer. Take care Yale 50 plus years time for a change.

YALE OL Boy we all fell the same not fun to go to the games no more.Every sat there are less and less going to the games soon there will not even 1200 in the bowl. Sat they were lucky if they had 2800 at the bowl. We can all thank Vicky Chun for this I wish she never came her.
