Yale 27 Harvard 45

This game was a lot closer than the score indicates. Our freshman Qb had some good moments but had some crucial turnovers. The running game was non existent. It has been said all year that the play calling needs to be better.

Our defense once again was overmatched and outcoached. We can’t get the right personnel in at the right time. We played man all game and were constantly beaten deep. I thought we would have made that adjustment this year. Our linebackers don’t have the speed to guard sweeps or they are slow at reading. We had personnel issues all season.

Some positives

We are young
We had 3 or 4 freshman that look like they will have impact next year.
The offense scored a lot of points and should be even better next year

Go Bulldogs

Rawlings would have made a big difference today. Nothing against O’ Connor who is terrific, but Rawlings has been there before and always comes up big.

Something has to be done on defense though.

Agree the defense must be improved but it appears there is a long way to go before it can match the caliber of Yale’s offensive talent. In order to win another championship we need more size and strength at just about all positions, DL, LB and DB. That will require another recruiting season or two. Next year could well be similar to this one – a team with the ability to score but the inability to keep the opponent’s scores low enough for us to win the games needed for another Ivy crown.

Thoughts while the images are fresh and the bitter taste lingers:
1. This was a winnable game until the defensive collapse in the 4th quarter.
2. All year our DBs show they can run stride for stride but fail to TURN AND LOOK FOR THE BALL when the receiver is obviously tracking ball.
I will bet anyone a Mory’s red cup that this Yale team had the fewest interceptions in the last 50 years of Yale football.
3. The defense has no concept of unified lane pursuit that leads to gang tackling and three and outs. Maybe too many guys are rotating in the front seven or the schemes are bad but Harvard schooled our defense in the second half.
4. The staff has a habit of expecting Dudek to perform superhuman feats when we need a score. It is obvious to the opposition and that is why they keyed on him in that critical 3rd quarter sequence. our offensive line was good all year but we need more plays that take advantage of the skill sets on this team.
5. Speaking of which, it looks like we have only one pass route for our RBs and when the defense makes the read it results in a kill shot on our running back.
6. No screens or jet sweeps in the playbook anymore?
7. With the exception of Shohfi, all of our other receivers had at least one play they didn’t make at a critical time. O’Connor played very well again.
8. Losing 10 of the last 12 to Harvard is unacceptable
9. O’Connor has a pro caliber arm and presence. They will have to play him some next year when it counts or send him to London on sabbatical.
10. We need to get some tough defensive line play next year, hopefully from maturing underclassmen who got their baptism by fire this year.
11. Tough banquet tomorrow as there were 3 losses that could have been wins.
12. The challenge for the staff will be to take all this talent and turn it into a cohesive, confident winning team. Focus on the defensive issues…..which are many.
13. The staff better put a fence around some of the obvious talent. FBS schools might make a run at some of them if they sense an opportunity.

I’m hoping all the negative noise dies down, issues are addressed, and the new captain helps lead the team to a championship next year.

Point #13 above: Are you serious that some player tracking towards a degree at Yale is going to transfer to FBS?? Do you get why a number of our player who had FBS options chose to play at Yale?? You obviously haven’t a clue what goes on at FBS schools and the COMPLETE lack of emphasis on players excelling in school.

I’ll answer your personal attack with more respect than it deserves.
First, I suggest you read Alex Galland’s letter to to the YDN and take note of the fact that in his words students and faculty ” scorn the sight” of football players and tell them them they “don’t belong here.” This is an attitude tolerated by the administration and it exists at other Ivy league institutions.
As for me not having a clue on what goes on I’ll simply say in response that I’m close to the program at Yale and very aware of FBS, FCS, and IVY programs, recruitment and admissions.
If you believe that there are no FBS caliber athletes at Yale and other Ivy programs second guessing their decisions you are sadly mistaken.

One Yale player told us this summer that the football players are treated by fellow students as undeserving of admission to Yale.
Lack of undergraduate attendance at home games says it all. Gloomy Prediction : The Ivy league will drop Div. I Football by 2030.

The greatest failure of Yale Football yesterday was keeping the team in the locker room for the National Anthem and flyover!

I have been following Yale football since 1946, and this has been the most disappointing season I can remember. Maybe it’s because of all the hype and predictions at the beginning of the season. For the last four years Yale has been among the top three in recruiting for the FCS. Where are all the seniors? Harvard started fifteen of them!! What is this about a “special culture” Reno is always talking about 146?

Guys what you saw sat you will see next year. same offense same results Horrible play calling by Cahill but what can you do when you have only 4 plays.Cahill is not the one to run this offense.Scrape the spread and move on to another offensive coach.Same with the defensive back coach he just as bad fired him to.If Reno sticks with the same coaching staff next year same results.Lost all respect for Reno how many SR did he play Sat Harvard played 15 or 16 how many where on the field after 4 years of sweat and blood boy what a guy.

How do you plan to engage alumni?

“The support of alumni and donors is a critical component of the success of a collegiate athletic program. Athletics plays a key role in fostering community beyond the campus boundaries and across generations. I fully intend to engage with alumni, share our vision for the program and build on the incredible legacy of Tom Beckett. We will celebrate our successes with alumni and ask for their input and support.” – Vicky Chun

gentlemen; i must say this is the worst feeling I have had walking away from the storied fenway park premises since the 1958 squad which was also soundly beaten by the tigers and and cantabs. it would be charitable to describe our defense this year as nonproductive and disorientated. this is probably the worst tackling squad i can remember whether this is due to coaching or individual prowess or a combination of both is for our coaches and individual squad members to decide. my humble advice to coach reno is to immediately start beating the path to recruit defensive lineman, linebackers and defensive backs who swarm to the ball carrier and enjoy the art of tackling. recruiting defensive players should be the focus over the next couple of years as our blue offense seems well set for the future.

RAY:
Any news, preferably good news, on the recruiting front? It’s been weeks since we’ve heard anything while h has been busily assembling an impressive looking class.
If you talk with any of the coaches, ask them about the possibility of converting some of our surplus OL’s (there will quite a few of them next year) into DLs. A nice summer project for someone.
Cheers, L et V

I HAVE NOT SEEN OR HEARD OF ANY YALE FOOTBALL RECRUITS SINCE AUGUST , 2018. BTW, RON CARR HAS DECOMMITED . ALSO , IT SEEMS THAT YALE HAS SIX HOME GAMES IN 2019 .

Correct re: six home games. Next year’s schedule:

HOLY CROSS
CORNELL
FORDHAM
@dartmouth
@richmond
PENN
COLUMBIA
@brown
@princeton
HARVARD

Shohfi! 3 sport captain in HS. Viewed by teammates as most likely to become president. A great leader for team 147! Good luck to him and to the team!

Shohfi strikes me as an excellent leader….talented, outgoing, obviously respected by his peers. I think he will an active and very visible captain on a team with great potential.

Since it seems as though student interest in football is lacking, maybe we need to think about ways to raise the profile. Maybe the university could hold a rally , a parade, or a bonfire? Sounds corny but it works at Dartmouth.

Yale Football , should implode onto its self. It is no longer relevant. I’d rather watch Trinity Football which has more spirit and less drama.!!!
Far better coaching in all aspects. ?

Thank you for proving my point. Reflecting back on this season. The coaching staff, under achieved. Lost a year of eligibility for Dudek. Yale , needs a bonafide QB Coach.
Why on earth would you have dual Defensive Coordinaters .!! All you need is McGowan. Unless he’s leaving.? Defensive backs coach has been lacking for years.

It’s tough to see a parade happening on the streets of New Haven. Probably works in Hanover because not much is going on there. Perhaps it’s worth giving a bonfire a shot on Old Campus.

Great to have six home games in ’19. Worrisome to take on Dartmouth and Princeton on the road. If Rawlings gets healthy and Dudek stays healthy I’m thinking 8-2. Hopefully that will be enough for a ring.

Yale will be picked 4 or 5 next year no defense. Yale cannot for some reason recruit defensive lineman. There is no one on the offensive line who could play defense next year.No one is tough enough. Also move Pope to Safety. If Cahill is still here next year good luck same offense same results.

gentlemen; in my humble opinion, it is not the offense which was the problem this year rather speaking on the obvious it was the defensive side of the ball. if our squad remains the same the defensive coordinators have to develop a scheme which accommodates the talents of our players. there is a need for defensive linemen and linebackers who can consistently tackle. i find it hard to believe there is not one offensive tackle who can be converted to defense. assuming #30 is fast enough to cover receivers i agree he would be properly placed at the safety position. i also am confused with the designation of co defensive coordinators in any event one or more of them should have recognized by the second half of the crusader contest the scheme used in the prior year would not work this year without mr carlson and mr alessi.

Hers the cream at the top for defensive players to be switched to DF. Cubby Schuller maybe in coming freshman Brandon Babcock . We also have Adam Raine let it rain let it rain and Tate Goodyear. Where are the recruits.

Did you see the Harvard game no offense 83 or 84 yards on the ground. An that was Dudek with his long run.Yale has no plays can you not see this. Cahill should not be an OF coordinator.

When you are playing from behind you can’t run the ball. Dudek actually looked better than he has since the first game and they wanted to use him more in the second half but couldn’t. Offense was good this year and will be really fun to watch next year. We might need to be with what we have returning on Defense. Hoping that Tate Goodyear is ready to contribute as we need a beefy run stopper.

I wouldn’t move Pope he will end up being our best linebacker. Has a nose for the ball. Didn’t play much early in the year and was still second on the team in tackles. Had a really good freshman year. We don’t have enough speed at linebacker as is. We need him on the field. I have always liked my best players at linebacker. Especially with our Run Defense struggling. But 205 is too light. They have to get him bigger. We don’t have the Defensive backs to stay in this man D. We give up to many big plays down the field. Harvard got the ball with a 1:30 in the first half and threw a bomb against single coverage which led to the easy score. Have to have some sort of prevent D. Defense has to be the focus this offseason. From players to strategy. Find your best players, and get them in the best position

The people that think Cahill and the 2018 bulldog offense under-performed have been watching too much Monday Night Football. I’m sure Sean McVay is begging to be the next Joel E. Smilow Class of ’54 Offensive Coordinator.

This bulldog team did a great job with what they had. They sustained drives and attacked teams through the passing game. The OL was not as dominant as last years and the running game suffered. Expect them to make huge strides this off-season.

The biggest off-season question is what they do with all of the returning weapons, especially with Lager’s alleged fifth year of eligibility

Congratulations to all the Bulldogs who made ALL IVY!
Zane Dudek and Griffin O’Connor – back to back “rookie of the year” honors is quite exceptional. Who would have thought before the season began Yale would have a qb rookie of the year behind the terrific Mr. Rawlings.

Well deserved recognition for superior performers on team 146. Klubnick, Lamar on 1st team – outstanding seasons! Shofi, Eiselen, Strother, and Matthaei not far behind. Rawlings and Burke great seasons, except for Rawlings’ injury. But, the silver lining was the emergence of Griffin O’Connor, Ivy rookie of the year. The QB spot should be in good hands for the next few years. I only wish Dudek had been healthy. In the first and last games of the season, he reminded us of what a fantastic RB he is. Good luck and good health to him next season!

Mark Whipple to Yale new off coordinator Icould see it now 50 60 points a game.Get him now .The bowl would be full avery game with his offensive. Just dreaming.

The Bowl would also be full if only we scheduled UNH or SCSU. Just kidding. Too bad Army is worried about bowl eligibility these days.

I assume Lamar stopped getting carries because his runs weren’t gaining yards, whereas Zany Dudek was effective (and strong enough to take on H defenders physically).

2019: There’s reason to be concerned, I assume, about the Tigers and Big Green, but — with maturation and more defensive talent — we are Harvard’s equal at worst. Columbia and Penn’s offenses don’t scare anyone. Plus Yale’s gonna outwork most programs out of the desire to bounce back. Great QB’s transcend a lot of other factors, and if Rawlings can play effectively in ’19 (or O’Connor matures fast) I think we can be 8-2 and right in the title hunt.

In some future year how about scheduling Sacred Heart and Central Connecticut to get some more locals in the Bowl?
