Positional Battles

With pre-season camp almost here, it’s time to start previewing the 2018 squad.  What do you think will be the most competitive positional battle for a starting role?

We can assume the positions of kicker (Galland), punter (Galland), long snapper (Simino), quarterback (Rawlings), center (Strother), one guard position (Eiselen), and one defensive end position (Mullen) are locked down barring an unfortunate injury.  That leaves us with a number of possibilities and combinations all over the field.

Despite being a pre-season All-American selection, Dudek will still have to battle Lamar for the starting running back position.  For those new Yale parents unfamiliar with Lamar, he was one of the lone bright spots during the 2016 campaign and single-handedly carried the team in some games.

Shohfi will likely be the number one wide receiver, but a number of players such as Klubnik, Rouse, Carrington, Marcinick, Locke, Herring and White will be vying for serious playing time.  If a freshman comes into camp and dominates, he could start as well.

Lager and Roman should be the front-runners for the tight end job.  Lager is the seasoned veteran and a balanced player with blocking and catching skills, while Roman presents mismatches for almost any secondary.

The offensive line will be one of the bigger question marks heading into camp.  Strother and Eiselen are the incumbents and are versatile enough to play multiple positions along the line when necessary.  Warfield, Lee, Sexton and Neagli have all been discussed as options at tackle.  Cepalia, Tribble, Hinish and several others could lock down an interior line spot.  Yale needs to develop cohesion in this unit, so the best combination of players that can work together will start against Holy Cross not necessarily the players with the most raw talent.

On the opposite side of Mullen, we will most likely see Callender or Roman.  Kissel and Sampleton gained valuable experience at end last season and Yale lists Matthaei as an end on the roster as well.  Matthaei started six games at defensive tackle last year, so naturally we’d expect him to start there opposite Nicholas Crowle.  Keeler, Fraser, Chime, James and others all have an opportunity to compete for a spot.

The fate of our defense will rest on the caliber of the linebacking corps and defensive backfield that we can put together.  Awodiran made tremendous strides at linebacker during his freshman year, while Burke, Herbert and Balter all return with starting experience at the position as well.  Dean and Carey were solid in their first year and we heard great things about Hill prior to his injury.  Talented freshmen are entering the mix and we wouldn’t be surprised to see a player like Noah Pope see action at outside linebacker.

Yale has depth and experience returning at cornerback with Peggs, Dixon, Alburg and Henson.  Safety is another story with no starting experience and very little depth, yet Reno seemed pleased with the play of Thomas and Agbeyegbe in the spring.  To survive the aerial onslaught of Princeton, we will need at least one corner to establish himself as a lockdown player who can play on an island and we will need the safeties to be great tacklers.  Carlsen and Alessi were not elite players in pass coverage, but they saved games with key stops.

I see Cepalia playing center with Strother moving back to his natural position at tackle, leaving Lee and Neagli as favorites for the two open slots. But who knows?

One of the keys to this season will be the integration and performance of the new members of the coaching staff. We lost some very valuable men to promotions at other programs.

Rawlings has to stay healthy, of course behind some new faces on the line. To me the biggest issue will be finding enough carries for the talented running backs in our arsenal. The single back, spread option offense presents a challenge that but I’m hearing rumblings there may may be some two-back looks incorporated. You can’t have Dudek, Lamar, Rouse and the other talented guys all competing for a single position.

McElwain could be very effectively utilized as either a Full Back or a H Back in a two back set. Lager could be utilized as just a H Back. Purvey probably just as a Full Back. Any combination of the above would help Yale’s running game, especially in short yardage situations.

Below is my guess for the starting OL at Yale. This line would average 6’5” and weigh 300 lbs, probably slightly bigger than last year’s and the biggest line Yale has ever had. If Neagli wins a job over what I consider the favorites below it would be even bigger. With size like this the running game should be emphasized.

76 Jack Lee OL Sr. 6-6 310
74 Sterling Strother OL Jr. 6-5 310
78 Steven Cepalia OL Jr. 6-3 285
72 Dieter Eiselen OL Jr. 6-4 300
77 Jett Sexton OL Jr. 6-7 295

When making decisions on how to build a starting line-up from this roster that can repeat as Champions I hope Reno reads to article below. It was prescient last year.

In applying the lessons of this article I already gave my preferences for OL and backfield to boost the running game. In regards to stopping the run I think Matthei, Crowle, Frazier and Keeler are the best options at DT in a rotation.

Gentlemen: may I dare say it will be interesting to say the least on how the carries are distributed between the halfbacks mr. dudeck, mr. Lemar and mr. charles. last year our blue squad averaged 39 running attempts versus 29 passing attempts per game. it would make sense to equally distribute the rushing attempts between these halfbacks to prevent overwork and injury. mr. dudeck was nicked up in the cantab clash after more than 25 rushing attempts in the tiger contest and cantab game. mr. hill never averaged more than 16 rushing attempts per game and mr. juaron averaged about 18 per game. mr. pagliaro and mr. diana survived more than 25 rushing attempts per game. distributing approximately 15 attempts per game will keep these scat backs fresh.

Yale had only one noticeable weakness last year, and that was defense against the long pass play. Rushing the quarterback helped diminish any damage. Hope there is some help here. Michael J Tomana is right about the significance of new assistant coaches.

Thomas and Agbeyegbe both looked really good in the spring game at safety. Cornersback should be strong with Dixon and Henson as my predicted starters. Peggs and Albert most likely will be used occasionally as nickelbacks in long yardage situations.

Did you see the FCS stats preseason top 25 – yale didn’t make top 25 or even top 30

Personally I could care less about preseason accolades. Talk to me at the end of the season.when it matters.

An 11th game is preferred over playoffs, although I have no problem with doing both

THE PLAYERS ARRIVE THURSDAY AND THE FIRST PRACTICE IS SATURDAY AFTERNOON ACCORDING TO INFO FROM AN INDIVIDUAL AT THE YALE FOOTBALL OFFICE.

Jimmy Check was cited for his play at QB in the spring scrimmage. Anybody have any information on him? Dis he play at all last year? Did he come highly rated as a recruit?

He was injured last year. looked very good in spring game. He should be Rawlings backup.

Put this in the calendar 9/8/18 3:30 Taft will play Choate . Be able to watch QB Nolan Grooms Yale commitment play. Probably a couple of players on Choate, who will be playing for Yale in the future.

I can tell you this much for certain:

2019 @ Richmond, Holy Cross and Fordham
2020 Richmond, @ Holy Cross.
2021 @ Mercer, Holy Cross
2022 Mercer
2023 @ Mercer

If anyone can fill in some of the blanks for the OOC opponents I would really appreciate it.

I’m pretty sure the Holy Cross series went beyond 2021 as reported by Chris Huhn on the now defunct Portal 31 blog. But I can only confirm games up through 2021 on Holy Cross’s website.

If I remember correctly, the Holy Cross series is home and away through 2028. I believe 12 games.

Bulldog10jw’s confirmation is good enough for me. That’s what I remembered too. So here is Yale’s partial future schedule through 2023:

2019 @ Richmond, Holy Cross and Fordham
2020 Richmond, @ Holy Cross
2021 @ Mercer, Holy Cross
2022 Mercer, @ Holy Cross
2023 @ Mercer, Holy Cross.

I predict a couple of Patriots will fill the four openings from 2020-2023, most likely Lehigh and Colgate. However, I’d love to see another CAA added, especially Stoney Brook. They are a top 25 caliber team, have a nice stadium and eastern Long Island in early fall makes for a great road trip. Albany would be another good option for similar reasons.

Saw the Twitter page. Sexton LT Tribble LG Cepalia C Eislen RG Lee RT.. where is Strother.?

That twitter means very little. It was taken in the spring. Sterling may have had a test. Who knows.

Sexton is out for the year from what I have heard. Sterling took reps today at Left with Lee and Warfield split reps at Right. Still a lot of time before the first game but if Sterling is healthy he is a starter.
