Reflections on the Crucial Win

Tre Moore’s ball security issues are a concern, but his passing seems to improve each week.

Freshman WR Reed Klubnik had a fantastic one-handed TD grab before the half that was truly a game changer.  Myles Gaines made a number of difficult catches to keep drives alive.  Williams-Lopez continued to shine.

The left side of the offensive line was anchored by Freshmen Dieter Eiselen and Sterling Strother who both played admirably in the first starts.

Freshman RB Alan Lamar exploded on Saturday with 23 carries for 180 yards and 2 touchdowns.  Candler Rich also ran nicely with 57 yards and Dale Harris made an appearance on the offensive side averaging 4.5 yards over two carries.

The defense stepped up when it mattered the most.  The game would not have been won without the interceptions by Carlson and Oluokun.  Dale Harris played well at cornerback making a touchdown saving tackle and delivering big hits.  Oluokun looked natural at safety and punished receivers every chance he could.  Freshman CB Malcom Dixon saw action and should supply quality depth to the secondary.  Captain LB Darius Manora was all over the field.  DT Nicholas Crowle played well on the defensive line and it was nice to see effective stunts up front with the defensive tackles and ends.  Freshman DL Julian Fraser made an impact and could shore up this line in the years to come.

I noticed that Siragusa was on crutches during the game. Looks like he’ll be out for an extended period of time. Didn’t see Williams-Lopez return to the sidelines after he left the field with an injury. That’s also not a good sign. The receiver corps are getting kind of thin. Looks like we may be seeing another freshman, Stohfli, next week at Fordham. Hopefully he’ll perform as well as Klubnick and Lamar did. May need to use the TE’s more in the offensive scheme too.

What is behind all these injuries to key players? This has been going on for the last five years! I don’t see anything like it among other Ivies – or am I wrong?

I talked to Mr. Siragusa after the game, and I believe his injury is season ending. I hate to see that for such a talented young man.

What about Jamal Locke? Why isn’t he returning kicks? He has been great at it! In some kind of dog house?

How do Locke’s stats compare to the incumbents’? Returning punts and kickoffs successfully requires moves as well as speed.

I don’t know. Can anyone comment? PS: Michael Siracusa is slated to start on the depth chart for the Fordham game!

This staff doesn’t update the depth chart prior to each week. Canon and Chang were written in as starters last week, but neither saw any action

Good and much needed win. It looks like some of the switching of things has done some good. Nice to see things falling into place.

Harris & Alessi back to CB and Oluokun back to FS were good moves as they have been productive there in years pasyt. There was no need to cram Salter, Rich, and Harris at RB, as a man was left out as there will be no rhythm with a 3 back rotation. However we are still in the same boat with that now as Lamar obviously proved that he earned and needs some reps there and should get them. I know it sounds callous, but if everyone is healthy at RB then Rich (even though he is the senior) should be the odd man out. The carries should be split between Salter and Lamar, I believe that is obvious.

It also looked like with the addition of Fraser at DL, Crowle having a better game, and Eislen on the starting OL (in addition to Strother playing for an injured Cannon) we were more successful on both the lines which obviously proved us well.

Not sure about the injury bug now hitting the WR’s but Williams Lopez went out and both Siragusa and Drwal were sidelined last week. Klubnick and Gaines had very good games and helped pick up the slack with Clemons and Shohfi contributing as well. Looks like those are the guys that are going to have to carry us until we get healed at that position.

As far as Jamal Locke goes it seems like he is a “contingency plan for injuries”. He has been switched from CB, to RB, to WR, and back to CB as the injury bug has hit each respective position seeing very limited time at all 3 places in games over the last 2 years. I guess maybe he has not proved productive enough to the staff to garner consistent reps at any of those places.

However you are right Andy Skodol, he has been a very productive contributor the past 2 years at KOR though and I am not sure why he is not currently there either. That seems to be the place he has contributed most to the team. Looking at his stats he has played there 2 straight years and last year he ranked 2nd all-time in single season KOR return yardage, and he currently ranks 4th all-time in career KOR yardage (in 2 seasons without appearing in every game). Last year he had an 84 yard return and was pretty close to breaking a few some other times as well. This year he has not been back there for 1 return. Seems like we could benefit from having him back there right now. With him at KOR and Alessi at PR we have 2 legit threats to score at each position, which could be huge for us. Not really sure that makes any sense not having him back there if we are trying to win, but of course it is a coaches decision. He must be in that dog house pretty deep.

I’m behind Coach Reno but I must say I’m puzzled why All-Ivy senior PK/P Bryan Holmes has been relegated to kicking off (and not full-time). Yes, Alex Galland has done pretty well on the 3’s, but what did Holmes do to lose his job?
I remember Tom Williams doing the same thing in ’09 to a quality veteran PK and that contributed to our blowing The Game when his replacement missed an easy FG. Anyone have any insights/knowledge? Is Holmes not 100%?
