Yale Drops to 0-3 after 63-35 loss to Lehigh

It’s hard to know what to say. I’ve been a big supporter of Reno, waiting until he had a chance to get his recruits in before I criticized him, at the same time appreciating the improved play of the Bulldogs. But after these last three games, this can’t go on.
Somebody can’t coach.

What puzzles me is why you would entrust Steve Vashel as your DC .? That never made sense unto its self. His DE’s have no clue on how to defend. Lastly Tom Beckett, has been at his position way over due. Just for his last 2 hires. I have never seen a Yale team get pummeled as this team has ever. Hope Yale Football does something. Hard to play in front of 3,000 people. Pathetic

I have to agree with both of the above. I have been a supporter of Tony for the last four years, but having followed Yale football since 1946, there has never been a team until this year that has embarrassed and humiliated the Yale football community as this one has – and the players are all Tony’s recruits.

There have been two hand-picked coordinators (Morris, Flanders) who have already been scapegoated to preserve the man at the top.
IMO, Vashel has to go, and now. It’s a necessary move to attempt to save face and save what’s left of the season.
But at season’s end, the man at the top has to face the music.
He was hired to beat Harvard. While not only failing completely at that, he has turned the program into one that cannot even beat Cornell (last week) or Columbia (’15).
It’s his recruits, his transfers, his assistants (including the ones who were scapegoated and released), his “Team 14x” mindset, his boom-box rap music warmups…his fingerprints on everything.
He was hired “on the cheap” as fourth choice, thanks to our jock-hating former President. It’s time for the new regime to make the right moves. Bring the football program in line with the hockey, basketball, and lacrosse programs — strive for excellence, not sub-mediocrity.

I agree with all of the above. I was an ardent supporter of Reno for the first four years, wanting to give him a fair chance to build a program with all of his own recruits. Along the way I drank the cool aid and believed all the hype. I expected a contender this year, or at least a winning season. Instead we’ll probably go 1-9 and 0-10 is a distinct possibility.

It’s not just the 0-3 start, it’s the manner of the losses. All the games were effectively over by half time. While I have seen progress each game on offense, I’ve seen no such improvements on defense. Rather, the defense hit a new low today, and that bar was very, very low.

Vashel should be fired from defensive coordinator tomorrow. Reno should be reevaluated at the end of the season. Unless continuous improvement is demonstrated on both sides of the ball throughout the remainder of the season he should then be released as well.

Yale already has gone 9 years without an Ivy League Championship or beating Harvard. It will almost certainly be 10 years on both counts after this season. The ship needs to be righted now or the damage to the football program could be irreversible. This can’t be allowed to continue.

Best recruiting classes every year in the Ivy/FCS, none of them are developed. Most of them look fat and slow. Most get big time injuries. Some aren’t even on roster any longer. Something is up, we need to look into it.
