Reno’s Update

Coach Tony Reno updated the Yale football community on Wednesday night via Zoom. Below are some of the notes from the discussion:

The current roster heading into next season currently stands at 123 players including 23 5th-year seniors and 24 reclassified juniors. Given the size of the roster, only 24 recruits were granted admission slots. Yale’s official recruiting list will be provided following the May 1st response deadline for all admitted students.

The focus this offseason has been to transform the talent pool into bigger, faster and stronger athletes. 8 starters will return on offense and 7 starters will return on defense. Reno believes that this team will have more depth than Team 148 and expects more players overall to see action in 2022. Improving the poor situational awareness seen in 2021 is a key goal of the rebuilt coaching staff.

The out-of-conference opponents in 2022 will be Holy Cross, Howard and Bucknell.

The spring game will be held on April 23rd at noon and will be open to the public. Practices will take place Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays leading up to the spring game.

A renovation plan for the Smilow Field House that now houses only the football and track and field teams has been approved. Fundraising efforts are underway to secure the capital needed to transform the facility.

Yale is providing 100 to 150 daily “snacks” to football players at an estimated cost of $1,000 per day.

Team 149 has adopted the slogan of “Now” to symbolize the sense of urgency and dedication needed to improve on the field, in the weight room and in the classroom on a daily basis.

Thank you very kindly, I suppose we all should be grateful that there is a season at all. Maybe a weaker OCC, will help develop these young men into better players.
Look forward to seeing football again. Especially at the scrimmage. Thank You Coach Reno.

Did coach Reno mention what happened with the four game series with Mercer?

A trip to GA would have been fun.

Nice to have 23 fifth year seniors for depth and experience but presumably there will be similar numbers at all the Ivy schools.

Or at least allow the new DC to teach his men to look back for the ball when it’s in the air.

Grooms is very good but does anyone know if Gavin O’Connor is still on the team? I have no reason to think otherwise but am wondering.

I would like to see an updated roster, according to the brain trust. It’s always updated..!! No dear it is in fact not. Carrington is at Monmouth, Beistek is at Georgetown. But they are still on the roster

Purdue 78 Yale 56

Yale needed to shoot well to keep it close but they did not. Still, it’s a successful year when you make the tournament since the Ivies only have one representative. Congrats to all the players and coaches.

Next year i hope coach jones recruits some players with height that can shoot and rebound. As of today he has two recruits and its getting late in recruiting just like football no news. Hats off to the coach the players and the other coaches great job this year. GO BLUE.

That 7’4” 300 lbs. center was a mountain.!! Yale did ok for the 13 minutes. God Bless those guys.
Yale women scoreless in the 1st period so far. Go Bulldogs

Congratulations to the Remarkable season The Yale Women’s Bulldogs Hockey Team had. Great job Coach Bolding, Well Done. Made us fans proud.!!

Can someone please explain to me why Yale got rid of WELI . For the Football broadcasts of the Yale football games.?
Which I used to enjoyed so much.Ron Vacaro and Jack Sidlecki were tremendous.
Is there any chance of that coming back.?

I agree, Ron and Jack did a nice job. Always nice to have the game on WELI from far away, the parking lot, or inside the bowl.

I am sure it had to come down to the athletic admin not wanting to pay to broadcast the games. Always comes back to money somehow.

Unfortunately,Yale doesn’t need to be penny foolish. But it is a great comfort to people who are fans of Yale Bulldogs Football.. I could get WELI from Springfield,Ma. to Hopewell RI. For the games. Or just to listen in the car. Be smart and appreciated if , they would reestablish the service. My 80 year old neighbor Steve gets very upset.about it.
Yes some of us still have landlines. Fan is is a fan is fan.!!! Take care of your fans

Maybe WELI didn’t find it financially worthwhile anymore. Dunno.

It’s sad there is no remnant left of the old WYBC radio, the (mostly) student station which also used to carry the games. I was one of their sportscasters from 1982-’87. I also did PA for hoops from ’89-’92; those teams could never quite overcome Princeton. I’m very happy for what Coach Jones & his teams have done for Yale basketball.

How about updating our football website with a 2022 schedule and an accurate Spring roster?

Don’t remember whether it has already been mentioned on this board that Colgate plays Stanford and Army this season.

YALE PLAYS BUCKNELL AND HOWARD !!

BTW, HARVARD LOST TO MINNESOTA STATE TODAY 4-3.

Ray:
Did I come across a recruit named Austin? The problem is, I can’t remember whether Austin’s his first or last name. I’m afraid that’s not very helpful.

This is the only Blog that’ the fans do most of the leg work for information. To all of you thank you, for doing what you do.
To the administration that runs this piece of s**t blog shame on you. Take more of a handle on this.
It’s not a lot that your fans ask for .!! Just be consistent with information. You read what we have to say. Embellish and utilize the format us.? Is that really to hard.?!!

Let’s go St. Peter’s.!! Giving Purdue a game. Quinnipiac is up 1 to 0 in the 1st period

Guys went back 2 years of Notre Dame football they have one player on there roster with the name Austin and he is a WR.Maybe this player thats 318 pounds will show up at Yale in the next few days lets hope. Also maybe he is one of the three players that were trying to find thats coming to Yale. Have a good day Walt.

Yale catcher today, Gehri, is 4-4 with four home runs(2 grand slams) and 11 rbi! He came into today batting .184 with no home runs and 3 rbi. His four home runs in a game is a new Ivy league record.

Yale Lacrosse is at #8 from 14 they have another big matchup this Saturday against #4 Penn at noon.

Yale basketball great Dr. Rick Kaminsky ‘64 has died in his home town of Houston where he was a retired urologist. His obit is online under his full name Robert Isadore Kaminsky.

Rick was a three-time Ivy Leaguer and was named All American his senior year. He led the Elis into the NCAA tournament his sophomore year. The Blue fell to Billy Parker and Wake Forest in OT after Kaminsky had fouled out.

Rick told me that he almost didn’t make it to Yale. At Bellaire HS in Houston he was All State and offered scholarships to all Southwest Conference schools. Adolph Rupp of Kentucky and Johnny Wooden of UCLA recruited Rick. But no Ivy team recruited him. Rick said his Jewish grandmother wanted him to go to Harvard, Yale or Princeton. So he applied to all three. Harvard thankfully rejected him. Yale wait listed Rick. He was all set to enter Princeton (where he would have teamed with Bill Bradley for two years) when Yale offered him admission. He accepted the offer and entered Yale in Sept 1960. He was tapped for Bones in ‘63.

Kaminsky’s recruitment says a lot how Ivy League basketball has expanded recruiting over the past sixty years.

Rest In Peace Dr. Rick, Any word on spring football practice.? Also what about transferring coming in .?

Gentlemen; my condolences to the Kaminsky family. Yes, times have changed over the past 60 years Mr. Kaminsky as a 6 foot one forward led the Ivy League championship blue squad in scoring and rebounding.

Reading the Yale Daily news today. All Yale teams referenced by the moniker of Blue and White. I do not like it Blue is sufficient.

Yale has a new TE coach Mark McMasters replacing Cerins. Who left .? No mention why but good luck to him..
Any chance we could GET SOME UPDATES ON THIS TEAM.?!!

Come on guys; update the website or transfer the responsibility for football to someone who will. There is no shortage of candidates in Vicky’s over-staffed empire.

Here’s a kick in the backside. Mathiue Araujo is the Miami Dolphins DB coach.?!!
WTH .!!! Good Luck to him. I guess Coach McDaniel, sees something that Reno is unable to do. Reading talent.?

Do we think Araujo may have gotten a pay raise? Will he poach assistant coaches from us as Reno did from Harvard?

7 coaching changes , that is a tremendous number to leave. FOR WHATEVER REASON. .?
I’m gonna start having nightmares again , of the collapse of the Harvard game again.

Yale baseball drops a doubleheader to Cornell blowing a 9-2 lead in the second game.

On the plus side, Yale men’s LAX beat Penn 12-11 in OT

So who are the other 4 Commits on this football team.? Can the moderator come forth please and complete the job. At hand.?

JACOB PORTER , ACCORDING TO HIS RECENT TWEET, HAS NOW COMMITTED TO TEMPLE.

Come on guys. Update the football website, and tell us what’s happening at Spring practice. Also, what gives with the Spring “game”? When, where etc.

So couple of days shy of 3 weeks on this thread. No mention of of coaching changes, deccomits from the 2022 class.
Lacrosse is ranked #5 in the nation, doing it with freshman. Moderator did you just give up. Do you even care.?
Have Sam Rubin take over this board. He’s a Yale alum. A good journalist. Have some one who cares. Like the last of your Yale fans do.

Yale men’s Lacrosse puts a beating on the BU terriers 22 to 15. BU kept the 1st strings against Yale’s subs. Very Classy Polley the head coach of BU scumbag.
Also congratulations to the Yale Women’s lacrosse team beat Army . They snapped Army’s 10 game winning streak 20 to 15

RAY:
Do you have Da’Quan Gonzales, 5′ 11″, 170lbs, CB from Loomis Chaffee/Jensen Beach, FL? Three stars and offers from everywhere. Hard to believe we’ll keep him if we actually have him, but who knows?

Give me a Y !! Give me a A.!! Give me a W Give me a N .!! What’s that spell. .? That’s what this board is..! 💩

What’s the difference between an “assistant head coach” and an “associate head coach.”

More pay?

That and I believe an associate head coach is either the offensive or defensive coordinator.

Sounds like they’ve taken a leaf from the academic world where associate profs are below full profs and above assistant profs. Traditionally, associate profs had tenure, but none of that applies here.

Getting back to the roster, if Pope is coming back, this is a significant development. LB is a potential weak position that Pope would help strengthen. Any other comments on strengths/weaknesses at positions given the current roster? The next FY class is still to be determined.

I’m also pleased to see 2021 Seniors WR Sandifer, RB Mcelwain Ol Schuller and DB Granberry will be back.

Yale should be stacked at WR and RB. OL needs to make the most improvement but I believe they only lost one OL starter. Linebacker is where they are most depleted. If Pope stays healthy it will help a lot.

RAY:
I can’t remember a lot of things, among them, whether you’ve listed Andre Thomas, Jr, a 6′ 2″ 207 lb OLB from Peach County HS in Fort Valley, GA.

I will be very glad to see Biggs on the field. I loved his videos. He’s a hitter, and he’s quick.

Any other ideas about position shifts among current players? Other than MLB, Yale LBs tend to be on the light but quick side. What about Owens shifting to LB? Benn? (He could channel his aggressiveness there….) What about a DE shifting to LB?

L ET V,

I LISTED ANDRE THOMAS, JR EITHER IN THIS RECENT SECTION OR IN THE LAST SECTION.

THANKX.

Yale beats down Dartmouth 23 to 6, now if only the football team. Could do the same.?
